BATHTUB CURVE ON GRAPH
Has anyone heard of the bathtub curve?
This is a graph of faults vs time in years. Typically a new car has common faults that show up in the first 3-4 years of production and then the manufacturer rectifies these and the curve flattens out . As the car ages , then age related faults show up and this makes the graph look like a bath tub. This happened with the VVTLi celica and there were common production problems with lift bolts and sunroofs.A revised lift bolt was offered and sunroofs were attended to during routine service times. I suspect this is why the 86 has no sunroof! The best time to buy is near the end of the 86 production and thus avoiding common production faults. Please don't take this the wrong way! Other manufacturers (besides Toyota and Subaru) have huge issues with their bathtub curves! |

i believe there is no sunroof because it would increase the car's center of gravity and overall weight.
personally, i would take one with a sunroof if it was an available option. |

The sunroof adds weight at the top of the car, hence why there is none. It would also be pretty hard to have one in a car with a "double-bubble" roof design.
I'm not worried about first-year production faults. They are usually recalled and repaired under warranty for no cost other than the slight inconvenience of having to bring your car back to the dealer. Small price to pay to have this car, IMO.

I hate sunroofs. Glad our cars won't have one.

It is common for convertibles to come out a year or more after a new model release, not sure why.

sunroofs also lower the amount of headroom. This is a bad thing!
Well, it is for those of us who are 6'4" at least. |

I've said this in another thread but I am worried a bit about the electric steering components and the powertrain but not to the degree that I won't buy a first year car. From the amount of beating that Toyota and Subaru are doing to these cars, it seems like they would have caught (and I'm sure they have) some problems in testing. Anyway I don't HATE sunroofs, I just don't like them and don't really use them. Every car I've had, had them, because they were not an option, just there. Sidenote: My 02 Civic SI (it's first year) has had it's share of problems. I did however buy the car used in '06. The main thing is the EPS, it creaks. But really it's just an annoyance more than anything. Plus most of the other problems, I'm sure, we're exacerbated by the previous owner. |

When I was young, I love seeing car with sunroof. That was really amazing to me before especially those motor driven one. Advantage of using it is the fresh air or light that can freely enter the passenger compartment.

I always wanted a sunroof, and my first four cars all had them. The fifth didn't have a sunroof, and I honestly didn't find myself missing it. Therefore, no sunroof for me.
I thought before, as others said, the double-bubble roof might cause some issues. However, people have put them on 370Zs, Webasto aftermarket, and it worked. Pretty sure it's to keep costs and weight down. |

I believe not having a sunroof also had something to do with the structural rigidity of the car right?
