Actually, the old (first gen) Matrix XRS would be a nice little car - 2zz-ge and 6-speed.
Wasn't the XRS the AWD version? If so, auto only.

Edit, my nomenclature is wrong. XRS was in fact manual.

Matrix XRS was basically the Celica GT-S 2ZZ engine and 6-speed manual option with bodykit. If it wasn't for the toliet sitting position this model could have been great.

Of course they are not totally going back to those old ones, only in spirit. If you can't pickup the various design cues from those old ones especially from the interior of the new LC and FT-1 then you probably need some new glasses.

Well the clock certainly looks like it came from the 80s! I don't think interior cues really reflect the spirit of anything.

What clock? Only Lencrafters can help you now.

Akio Toyoda came to Toyota in 1984. This is the golden era and the time prior to that he wants to bring the company back to, and the little design details here and there since the LF-A and the twins serve merely as hints to that.

I'm starting to think that in order to get an unfavorable project like a sports car pushed thru the bean counters at Toyota, they always require a current competitor car to exist on the market in order to build a viable business case.

If they are going with automatic only and high tech it's probably aimed squarely at the Nissan GTR, likewise how the twins are considered to be the direct competitor to the Miata right from the start. Not much wiggle room from the marketing dept it seems.

I'd like to see Akio Toyoda throwing his weight behind these things more, but there's still only so much one person can do (even if they are the CEO).

Meh, not with rwd only and a convertible it's not.

I'm thinking Jaguar F-Type and Boxster/Cayman competitor which lines up with pricing rumors at ~$60k give or take.

The Miata and 86 are so different it's hard to see them as competitors if you spend any time in them. Even from a raw performance perspective the extra weight of an 86 is impossible to ignore.

Yea I agree it makes no sense but that's how the manufacturers have claimed their products to be competing according to Japanese publications over the years.

It's a good barometer, I won't argue that, "Mazda sells xxx sports cars per month, Ford/Chevy/Dodge/Hyundai/Nissan sell xx,xxx per month, we think we can take a slice of that market and make a profit"

All I mean is that in a head to head comparison the only reason why you wouldn't have a preference is if you didn't know what you wanted out of a sports car in the first place. It's not like Mustang v Camaro where they're 90% the same on paper.
