I'm a 47 year old CPA. I audit real estate settlement agents and attorneys for a living. I drive a lightning red 2014 BRZ. I spend 150 nights a year in hotels and travel hundreds of miles per month in this car. It's actually more practical for solo work driving than a sedan would be.

I once pulled up to a client's office just as she was stepping out of her SUV. She said, "I wish I could afford a sports car like that!" She was getting out of a $50K Lexus.

I recently audited an attorney who works out of his home, so I had to park in front of his house. We spent five minutes talking about the car as I was leaving. He knew what it was and was considering buying one.

A couple of months ago I audited a husband/wife team of attorneys in their 60s. She drove a Porsche. He drove a Hellcat SRT Charger. They had relegated their SRT6 Crossfire to use as the company car for their runner. So unprofessional! We followed her to lunch, and she laid rubber on the road pulling out of their parking lot.

The only way this car becomes unprofessional is if you mod the shit out of it with giant wings, ridiculous camber and a stupid paint job with dumbass decals and stickers. Otherwise it's just like driving any other sports car, except that it's a little less expensive.

I bought mine at 27 and am now 30. I came from a 1994 Honda Prelude.

When my now wife, then GF, came out to test drive a FR-S (Subaru dealerships were real stingy about BRZ test drives) she power slid it smashing me against the side of the car (I was testing the rear seats, not much bolstering...). Lesson all, marry well.

The first year I had it, I took delivery in January 2014 in Detroit, MI. It was the worst winter in terms of snowfall and ice on the roads they'd had since ~1944. I had the dealership put Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires on it for delivery as it would be my daily driver. That winter, and multiple since, it has only ever been stuck in snow once during a blizzard in DE and only because we stopped and dug out a stuck Dodge Magnum on an I-95 off ramp. (I've only ever had stock tires on test drive, eventually we'll get a pair of proper summer / performance tires for it and a proper set of winters, but it has spent its life so far on a good set of all season tires. Granted, I don't track / race it.)

If you plan to have a significant other or get married I strongly recommend a BRZ Limited, dual zone climate control is marital road trip bliss.

As for professional... I work from home... but when my wife has driven it to work she's been criticized by a few co-workers for letting her husband get away with buying a "$70,000 sports car".

And, for the other people in my life... Well, my dad is trying to convince my mom that if/when they need a second car in addition to their Subaru Outback she should let him get one.

As for practicality, see here: http://mooncallercars.blogspot.com/2...ubaru-brz.html
The rest of the time, on the rare occasion we need something larger, we rent.

And in terms of more seats... when we finally need 4+ real seats my wife has threatened me with a WRX or STI saying she'll take the BRZ as her DD.

The doubters in your life be damned.

It's true. Driving an FR-S/BRZ does make you look like a bit like a kid. But the good thing is, it makes you feel like a kid. I still look forward to driving it everyday. If that makes me immature, so be it. Better than driving a soccer mom vehicle.

I am 26 years old. I am getting a lot of push back from family and friends on this purchase because it is not practical, two seater (pretty much) , rear wheel (bad in the snow), and not professional. This would be my first manual car, and something i always wanted to learn. I will be buying this car regardless, but the push back and reasons i am getting aren't necessarily untruthful.

A lot of the criticism are:

"You are getting too old, you should be looking for something more practical."

"This car doesn't look professional.. you will look like still a young kid with a tuner car"

"You will regret it driving a manual car in the city"

"You won't survive in the winter"

"Why are you getting the same car, didnt you learn your lesson?"

I am sure there are many owners on this forum who can block this out because at the end of the day they know what they really want. But I would like to know what kind of criticism you had to deal with to purchase this car, a long with how to cope with these. Many of my friends are moving on and getting SUV, or like luxury sedans, and they think i am still silly going for these cars, and modding. I dont feel really old, but I don't think i am living in the past either. I feel like i can still drive this car up until my first child, which can be quite a while a way.

What are your thoughts owners? Did you get any criticism? I hate it when other try to push upon their right way of living onto you.
While they might not even be aware of it on a conscious level, these are people who have abandoned their dreams in life for some perceived notion of growing up and fitting in. A good example of this is that once one person in a peer group gets married, then has kids, the rest of the peer group tends to succumb quickly. Ditto with the divorces.

Your best path is to pity and ignore these creatures.

MG Midget>MGA>MG Midget>MGB>MIATA>FRS and a steady diet of redheads to fill the passenger seats.

Screw growing up, you will be dead soon enough.

Edit:

Daughter grew up in the front seat of a Miata. I was told that I could not put a car seat in a Miata. We have great memories.

+1 . The demographic on this car from Toyota was for an under 30 crowd I believe, but those of us that grew up driving RWD cars in the 80's, 90's found this car to hit the right buttons price wise and fun factor, at least for me. If i had a choice without money limiting my choice i'd have a different car. But so far this is the funnest car I've ever owned.

The target demographic was the entry level sports car "enthusiast" and as such was not age based. The perception may be the under 30 crowd but that was not necessarily the target other than many of the entry level folks just happen to be that age. Didn't help the perception that it was badged as a Scion which did indeed target the under 30 group with all of their cars.

Thats why I ended up erasing all the Scion badges the Toyota badges just speaks better volumes.

In seriousness though this car is really the modern Alfa Romeo's GTV 2000 with better reliability.

In the end, they don't matter.

YOU need to evaluate your needs, then wants and then see if the car is right for YOU.

Notice how I ranked NEEDS before WANTS.

If you NEED 4 four seats, perhaps this isn't the right one for you. Maybe a WRX.

If you NEED only two seats, then move on to WANTS. Do you want a great handling economic sports car?

In the end, you can always find detractors. The question is: are you one of them?
