Not always true. New M4 is bigger than the car it replaces and yet lighter by a decent amount. Just depends on the bean counters and how dedicated they are to keep weight down

The M3 MSRP was about $55k just a few years ago, the M4 will be $64k. Plus BMW already had a much larger profit margin than Ford.

I suspect this thing will still hang with an M3/M4 around a road course. The 2011 Mustang 5.0 already ran very similar lap times with Randy Pobst behind the wheel, and that was with the solid rear axle.

However you slice it, still a lot of car for the money.

I'd take an E92 M3 over a Mustang any day

The competition package E92's with the 7-spd DCT transmission is one of the best driver cars out there IMO

But the Coyote motor makes solid #'s with bolt on's and a few mods. IRS is going to be big for that car

^ Having driven a Boss302 around the track I would say the Mustang will shock a lot of people in how good it is

I quite like the new car. Unfortunately, I wasn't in a position to wait for the second model year of the new car. I refuse to buy the launch year of any car, because I want to give the company time to iron out the kinks, and I was in a lease that had ended last April. I'm quite excited by the new car. I'd like to see how an IRS car stacks up against a Boss 302 with a Watts Link. If I'm entirely honest, the updates I'm most excited about are the full leather wrapped steering wheel, the new, more legible gauge font, and the offset cupholders, so they're not in the way of my shifting like they are on my car. I love the fact that they got rid of the random floating 1/4 window for an integrated window, the big brakes and the machined/black wheels. I'm not crazy about the height of the front bumper or the "GT" badge where the faux gas cap used to go. I'd rather it said nothing there, or drop a blue oval there or something. I'd debadge that immediately.

Most people would take a (realistically optioned) 68k BMW over a (loaded) 43k Ford.

I'm on 7 Mustang forums...trust me, you'd be amazed how many people think that a stock 5.0 is a better car than an M3 because of that magazine comparison

As fast, sure. As good? No. If I were in the 65k, I'd have a C7 Z51. But that's beside the point. I went from 3 years in an RX350 with the extra soft leather option and power folding mirrors to a car with manual seats and mirrors that don't fold at all.

A Brembo Brake/Track Package Mustang will run with an M3 around a road course. The M3 will make much fewer compromises.

A thousand times yes. People on the internet get WAY too wrapped up in specs and with "numbers cars". Anyone who's actually driven both can almost instantly tell why one is worth way more than the other.

The reason is refinement, the BMW has it, the Ford has much less of it.

I've been wanting to push a Boss 302 on the track, just haven't had the opportunity. How would you say the handling compared with the FR-S or S2000?

Exactly, they will argue that the Mustang is a better car, and has nicer interior etc..lol as a Mustang owner myself, I would trade my Mustang for my dads E92 M3 any day of the week, and create another day just to make a point

But Mustang owners are very passionate about their cars, same with Camaro and Challenger owners

I would say it is hard to give a fair comparison as the FRS felt ligther in the corner with a much sharper turn in but the grip levels on the HPs hinder it when comparing to the 302 cause I felt way more confident that the tires would hold the speed better. I was just shocked at how stable the car was when doing quick transitions. I feel the FRS rear end wants to come around a bit too easily without TC on however I'm a novice so my driving isn't pretty meh

I only had a couple hours behind the wheel of a s2k and never at the track so kind of hard to say

Deff agree with this. Its kind of shocking how in some circles the muscle cars still don't get that much respect tho.

its almost exactly how people try to compare a scion to a cayman though. which happens constantly here without much counterpoint
