Manual take rate on the Subaru is ~85%, Toyota has been selling ~80% automatics even since the Scion days.

The press says it's more like 66% for Toyota being AT, but remember the buyers really didn't have much of a choice, they had to take what Toyota had in their build plan, you really couldn't order it custom. A lot of folks went to the lot looking for an MT but bought an AT because that was what was available. It rarely happens the other way around, mostly because if you want an AT you have a reason (including but NOT limited to whether you can drive an MT). I think Toyota just erred on the side where they knew they could sell the car to anyone.

EDIT: Ultimately, I'm trying to say we really don't know the true preference for MT because cars are not built to order. Sales figures don't tell you much.

Interestingly, even among the First 86 group that registered here (71 of the 86 registered at one point) 28% selected an AT.

We did have a chance at our Long Beach gathering to "change our mind" on color and transmission (our only two choices) after we drove the demo cars. Most stuck with their original selection, but there were a handful that switched AT->MT and MT->AT.

Where did you get those numbers? I recall seeing some stuff for the 2018 or 19 MY but that was only one year and is not indicative to the whole run of cars. I recall that the FRS MT rate was someplace around 70%.

Picked up a base auto, came on the 19th.

Was pretty dirty, so washed it right away.

Immediately after, Chemical Guys HydroCharge, HyrdoSlick, JetSeal, and ButterWet Wax. 5 hours to complete 4 layers.

As an ex-owner of a turbo RS1.0 FRS, I can say then following:
1. It is very refreshing to have to much tech, even in a base model.
2. I was 95% sure i was going to disable the Sport mode artificial sound-turns out, I like it. I'm keeping it.
3. The torque at low rpms is amazing, amazing compared to the old car. I haven't gone past 4k rpm yet, but the low end torque makes daily driving very nice.

Just chilling here hoping Toyota comes to their senses and orders a bunch more Premium Neptune Blue MTs so I can get one sometime this decade. Would be nice if they just took orders for cars like a normal company.

I'm not sure any of them are really allowing special orders at this point. I think you get what they have its just most cars are built in sufficient quantity they can usually make a match.

I wonder if the first bolded thing is only due to the second bolded thing. Seems like it really opens up past 4k. I find myself wholeheartedly cringing every time I hear it in videos but 100% possible the sound could be more endearing in real life. We'll see.

Congrats on the car though. I'm waiting very anxiously for a red Premium MT, order placed mid Dec and still not so much as a hint if or when I will get a car So I'm jealous of that AND of your ability to wash your car in your garage. I mean, I could do it, it would just be an ungodly mess

Edit - also adding in general/not directed response that my local dealer has a base AT in white sitting in the showroom I was able to get a good look at. Easy to get into a comfortable driving position, liked everything about it really. The center console storage is a worry but I won't carry near as much junk in this thing as our other cars, so I'm figuring on keeping a little cup in the rear-most cupholder for change and little junk and then should be adequate storage elsewhere for whatever else I plan to take along.

I'm uneasy about lack of spare. Considering how I'll use it though, I think it will be OK. Will be awesome to keep all of the rest of my junk in that space.

For those that have your GR86s landing in Feb Toyota still has the $500 incentive until the end of the month.

What about for all of those with GR86s stuck in purgatory with no ETA in sight?

My dealer still has no info on the car I "ordered". I suspect I may have to wait for a 2023 model.

A new round of allocations should hit this week. I might drop in Friday to check if I don't hear anything by then.

I know, it sucks. Mine has been on a train west of here for almost 3 weeks now and my dealer said they have a 4Runner sitting on a holding lot by the train station waiting to be transported by truck and it’s been sitting there a while. I really need to stop feeling sorry for myself when others don’t even have an ETA yet.

I just picked up my new 86 yesterday. It popped up as incoming on my local dealers site on 1/26 and I inquired and it was available at MSRP. Immediately put deposit and just took delivery yesterday 2/1, so consider myself relatively lucky in this market. I owned a 2013 FRS and many other sporty cars since then, and excited to be back. Feels very familiar except for much more torque, more refined, and suspension and PS4 tires make quite a difference in handling (limit and feel). Surprisingly nice looking in person to me.
