The presence of a drop top will not remove your man card. As a driver of a "girl car" I will continue to drop the tops of women all the while maintaining my masculinity. The removal of a roof opens opportunities and at no point closes doors. This car was not only built without a roof but it was built with a roll cage in mind so regardless of your racing alliance you are covered.


TL;DR: Deep breaths, convertibles will not hurt you.

The Japanese brand has confirmed to German magazine Autobild it is developing a drop-top version of its upcoming 86 coupe - a car that would be directly targeted at Mazda's popular MX-5.

"The [86] was designed from the outset to be built as a convertible," Toyota's chief engineer for the 86 coupe, Tetsuya Tada, told Autobild.

There's no further word on when the car will make it to production, but reports on car enthusiast sites suggest it could make its motor show debut as early as 2013.

The other day on the release of this Covertible leak @switchlanez and I were talking about this with Moto Miwa on this Facebook page. At the mention of the above quote that was mentioned Moto San clarify it to be this

"I think what the German was supposed to say was that the GT86/BRZ platform has a very rigid structure that can accommodate being made into a roofless car with slight alterations than traditional coupes. But no, the original concept was a track ready, low cost, LIGHTWEIGHT, and dynamically superior car... And convertible plan would have been counterproductive to half the goals. Now that there's plenty of fun coupes out and about, the convertible is now the fun fashionable addition to the line up. We should embrace it!"

So just alittle clarification to send out the real message which isn't too different and is still pretty good. I'm just excited as you are for the Convertible.

Also add to this, Tada-san didn't care for open top.
