I just put down a deposit with my sales guy at the Toyota dealer to claim dibs on the first Hakone 86 that they're getting. He was able to show me on his computer that it was manufactured on 9/9/19 and will be put on a boat on 9/18 and is expected to come off the boat on the west coast on 9/29. He said it'll probably arrive there at the dealership around the end of October.

It's remarkable how little they know about the 2020 86s at this point. He has no information whatsoever about:
- How many Hakones are being imported.
- When they'll start getting the (non-Hakone) 2020 86s.
- What options will be available and for how much.

He did say that they are also getting an AT version of the Hakone, probably on the same boat as my MT.

Even if the press release or just general info was released recently about the 2020's (new HU, TRD handling package available, new color) the websites still haven't been updated yet.

I just received the dealer's print out for my 2020 Hakone Manual (no TRD Option). Got the VIN number. Dealer says the vehicle will arrive in the port mid-October and he should receive it early November.

Since I can use WAZE on my Android phone with Android Auto on the 2020 model and the Hakone comes with center armrest, I only expect to add mud flaps and bumper protector to the options. I will purchase a K&N filter separately. I will swap the Michelin PS 4S's off my current 2015 FR-S with the stock Bridgestone all-seasons. I will take the shift knob and weathertechs from my 2015 and use in the 2020 model. I drive year-round, so my winter wheels and tires go on to the new 2020. The stock Hakone wheels will go in the basement for spring changeover with new 4S's on the front and 5K mi. 4S's on the back.

My Ultramarine 2015 FR-S will get new rear brakes, 65K service, the brand new OEM all-season Bridgestone Tauranza's from the Hakone, and a nice wax job for its next owner. Except for tires and K&N filter, it is bone stock with mud flaps, NAV, and armrest, in outstanding condition, and will sell (not being traded in) for an attractive price.

Doug
Does "no TRD Option" mean it's not available on the Hakone, or that it's available but you did not get it?

Thanks.

The dealer near me got one in. I went to go see it.

I did not get interior pictures unfortunately, but it was clean. The arm rest is the one that slides on top of the cup holders. (I originally thought it was the cup holder armrest).

Overall the car looks nice in direct sunlight, and better in person than the pictures show. But I decided against it (honestly still thinking about it). It would be a no brainer if it came with the TRD package(brembro).
In the dark it just looks like a dark forest green/black car. For the price its kind of high especially with no cash back incentives or anything.

There is possibly 1055 units going to be made, so I think thats a good amount?

I am surprised that there was a lot of orange peel in the paint. Does anyone know if this is normal on the 86s? I've only looked at white brz/frs/86s and never saw this.
The pictures don't show the orange peel but its definitely there. The sales manager told me they do it on purpose to protect the paint

Thanks for posting the pictures. That is one rich color!

Oh yes, the "orange peel" is by design. They apply it that way to protect the paint (since it's dark green and tries to absorb a lot of light rays). The orange peel makes it sort of bumpy, therefore, it refracts the light, so it doesn't fade the paint. The same principle that is why they put particles on the surface of composition shingles on roofs - they refract the light so that its not absorbed directly by the tar in the shingles, thus melting them.

For what it's worth, my 2019 World Rally Blue BRZ has plenty of orange peeling on most if not all the panels.

That green does look fantastic though.

I do not know if the TRD package is available on the Hakone, but I use 16" winter wheels which would not work with the bigger brakes, so no TRD is my preference.

Humfrz, howcome you are not a car salesman. I would gladly fly up to WA when I visit my parents & get one from you.

Oh, I interviewed with several local car dealerships, but, after they checked my driving record, I didn't get any offers. They said that I had a history of backing into too many things -

Whadafah? Not according to Consumer Reports.
https://www.consumerreports.org/buyi...omotive-paint/
For that mater, Not according to any dealer, auto body shop or detailer I know.
My wife's 2016 WRB STi and my CBS 2018 BRZ tS both had noticeable orange peel on the vertical areas like fenders. But, little to none on the flat sections like hood, roof or trunk. I've been told, (and read it on this forum too think) that it's a by-product of water based paints now being used.

DANG, old man, mind your blood pressure there -

I was told that by Bubba's son, who paints vehicles for a living, although he specializes in John Deere tractors, and he did take an on line course in optics.

Here he is, painting a BMW.

Now who ya gonna believe, Bubba's son or Consumer Reports?

^Looks like he's using at least a 1/2" nap roller, maybe even 3/4". No professional would be using anything but a 1/4" nap roller and the best would be using a foam roller to get a concours level finish.
