Glittery engine oil after short block replacement

2013 frs 125k

Long story short: engine started knocking after Valve spring recall. Oil pick up screen was clogged.
Dealer replaced short block.

~4500 miles after short block.
3 oil changes since then.
oil change at 500, 1000 then 4500miles.

This video is from the 3rd oil change. Look like i put some glitter into the oil. The other 2 oil changes was not like this, some gold flakes nothing crazy but no glitter.

Is this normal after short block replacement or am i about to get a knock on the door?

Not normal. You have a bearing about to go. Thank that shit dealer for fucking you two times. I give it a 2 weeks to a month before it’s knocking. Surprised it isn’t already knocking.

Well let me confirm one thing. This pan wasn’t used to drain your oil after the first failure was it? If so this could be left over bearing material from the last failure that you just didn’t notice on your other changes post short block replacement.

The pan was used for the 3 oil changes after rebuild. But the 2 oil changes before wasnt sparkly like this one.
I hope it is left over material. But doubt it. And the fking dealer not going to do sh** till i tow it to them.

It wouldn’t be left over in the engine if that is what you are thinking (hoping). Not 2 changes later suddenly showing up. This is a new failure in the making. Sorry to hear about this.

They most likely botched the packing like they did on the recall and your pickup will be covered in packing. I would try to be around and get pics of the pickup before they clean it up and play stupid.

I meant like left over material in the pan. I dont remember cleaning the pan in the last few oil changes.

Is it possible that this is just engine breaking in?

I have a general question:

Can the oil pan on a FA20 engine be removed without taking the engine out?

If so, what I would do is to have Bubba, up at the local automotive shop, drain the oil, change the filter, remove the oil pan, check and clean the oil pick-up screen, clean the oil pan, replace, fill with oil. Then drive the car for a few hundred miles and observe the oil for metal particles.

engine has been running and sounding perfectly normal. No ticking or knocking.

Pretty sure oil pan can be removed without taking engine out. I would do it, but i have a year of warranty on the engine and it could or might avoid warranty, or i won't be able to prove that their work caused the damage because i cleaned the clogged pickup screen etc..

If i do end up taking it to dealer i will do that for sure.
I was thinking and i have fumoto drain valve, and since i don't have the drain bolt magnet to collect the sludge, so my oil looks like this? idk. I guess i'll just live with it and if it blows i'll tow it to the dealer.

When I was asking about your "pan" I was referring to the one in your video. My drain pan at the house has been littered with bearing from three different cars over the years. Unless you clean it really well who knows what you are looking at.

But in the post I am quoting I think you are referring to the oil pan on the car. I know the dealer screwed up on the valve recall but if they are dumb enough to put a new short block on the car and not bother to clean out the pickup and pan then wow they are on a new level of stupid.

As I said before, I suspect you are in the process of eating another bearing in your brand new short block and I would bet a lot of money that your pickup is blocked with packing.

Yes you can drop the pan without pulling the engine but I agree with your logic about the warranty. Just leave it alone and hope the dealer takes care of you.

Well i hope they did clean the oil pan when they replaced the short block. I was directly talking with the GM of the dealer and he said he put his best guy(master tech with 30 years or smthn experience) on my engine. I also met the tech who seems to know what he was doing. I will send in oil sample to black stone and see where this goes. I'm just going to drive and enjoy the car, got autocross tomorrow.
