The R400 is a mid sound catback that is quieter than the N1 but louder than the Q300 (barely louder than stock). The N1 isn't really even that loud of a catback. Any 3.0in catback without a massive muffler (Perrin) will be louder.
Yeah I’m probably just comparing it to the massive increase from stock. It has grown on me very quickly though, and sounds great. Uphill is still loud, but it’s fine otherwise. I want to say, without offending anyone hopefully, that any louder than this setup is unnecessary. Preference though I suppose, but I prefer to keep my hearing.

If you want performance, sell the R400 for a Q300, or consider having a local exhaust shop swap in an inline muffler/big resonator where the Invidia resonator is.

Something like this should retain the sound, but bring down the volume. It's intent is to be a muffled resonator: http://vibrantperformance.com/catalo...products_id=46
Performance isn’t really a big deal. My understanding is that no massive gains will be realized anyway without FI, $5000+, and a lot of time/patience. This car isn’t about straight lines. If I wanted performance, I would have kept and fixed my GTI. Also, living in SoCal, there aren’t many opportunities anymore to really use that performance unless you go to a track.

I have the r400 with tomei uel and it sounds pretty good. But the only gripe is that I hear a bit of a rasp to it. Idk if my headers are leaking since I bought it used plus I got the grim speed gaskets with it.

I should have gone with the q300 but I went with the R400 for fear of regretting the q300.

After a day of riding around with this I do love the sound and tone but the in Cabin noise is really wreaking havoc on my tinnitus especially at low RPM in each gear my ears are ringing.

Also despite hours of efforts the mechanic was not able to get the tailpipes to come out at equal length. I am really hoping that Invidia given the bad construction of this particular one that I purchased will be kind enough to allow me to exchange for a q300.

Or if not at least pay the mechanic for a vibrant resonated Muffler and install on to this R400.

I just got this exhaust installed. Running Gruppe-S UEL headers. It's definitely too loud.

Same setup as me. I wonder if sticking the tips out 2 inches would get rid of the drone in the cabin?

Let me know if this works. There's so much god damn bass / deep low drone at all speeds. I can barely listen to music unless it's turned up to 30 or more.

Would the JDL ultra quiet front pipe help?

EDIT: I ended up ordering the Q300.

How's the q300? I'm adding a vibrant ultra quiet resonator to my r400.

Sounds exactly stock again - What a waste of my time and money haha I honestly think Perrin 2.5 Resonated cat-back is the way to go.

Wait... A gruppe s UEL header and q300 sounds stock? I'm finding that hard to believe. All setups like this on YouTube have a very definite boxer rumble and volume. Please elaborate.

Sorry I meant that it sounds like when I had OEM cat-back with the UEL headers only.

Two things:

One: Detroiter is right, This setup especially with a stock front pipe isn't that loud. I ran an R400 for a while fully catless, and I had no issues commuting on the highway every day averaging 4500 rpm. Mid range volume describes the exhaust quite well.

Two: Addressing OP, I noticed when I switched exhausts that although the R400 isn't technically that loud, it's more of an exhaust you can "feel" in the cabin. I actually went to a louder catback than the r400, but the new one is quite well made and all of the sound is exclusive to the rear of the car. I can have a full conversation inside despite the exhaust echoing off of other cars.
