Fuel Fill Tube Collapsed

So about 6 months or so ago I started having issues with filling up my car at the gas station because I couldn't use the auto fill. It would basically stop filling almost instantly if i tried to pump at full speed. I figured it was a vent tube issue and I would fix it later.

Today i took my car into Toyota to have them check it out and see if they could fix it. After about 5 hours of waiting the tech discovered that the rubber hose section of the fill tube internally collapsed. This would cause it so that i could slowly fill my tank but caused enough of a blockage that any flow over a trickle would shut off the filler. This rubber hose is about a foot and a half long and attaches to the top of the gas tank and connects to the metal gas fill tube that goes all the way to the fill port. In order to replace this part you have to drop the fuel tank so its a huge pain in the ass.

Luckily, even with all of the work I have done to my car including a couple fuel pump swaps they are covering it under warranty. The rubber hose has also been changed to a new part with a new part number and everything. Toyota say that gasoline additives and E85 can cause this issue where the internal lining of the rubber hose will collapse. I don't know how true that is but they are replacing it for free.

So just a heads up to anyone that might experience slow filling gas tanks that this issue exists. My car was bought in June of 2012 so it may just be a first year thing if it even becomes a thing. I also have about 20k miles on my car.

Your mileage suggests they had little choice(ZERO) in doing this under warranty. How many warranty jobs they've done for you in the past is also irrelevant. If they tried to make you "feel" lucky, you need to remind them it's the other way around. If you placed that feeling there yourself, remove it

While your basic warranty goes 3 years/36k(covers just about everything), other parts(engine, powertrain) get 5 years/60k. The fuel hose may not be considered part of the engine, but would definitely be covered on your basic 3/36 anyway.

As for the work, mods I assume...they would have to prove the mods had an effect on the part getting warrantied. Lowering your car, wheels, etc., wouldn't cause a fuel hose to collapse. So again, if they gave you even a hint of "we're doing you a favor", consider never returning after the warranty is out and let them know why when the time comes.

You can go to ANY Toyota dealership to have warranty work done. While it seems they're doing you good, consider what I've written for the future. You still have plenty of warranty left, and they can still become ****s later on.

Sad, this shouldn't happen even on an old vehicle. I'd like to think it was a fluke. Thanks for the heads up.

This seems to be another problem with the early release 2013s. There are a few threads here on the subject and all seem to be early production cars.
Are any of you guys in a 14 or 15?

I'm a little late to this thread, but has this happened to anybody else? This is just happened to me and it's in the shop now. I have a 2013 with almost 90K miles. Does anybody know how common this is? I'm worried that Toyota will just replace it with the same defective part, so that it can happen again in the near future.

It was resolved with the later 13s. They will not replace with the same part. All is good.

Anyone know the build dates that this seems to be effecting? I have a 2013 but i ordered mine in feb 2013 when it was nearly a model year old. Also ive read of some issue with the hpfp and e85 on the wrx is this a issue with brz? I normally run 2-3 tanks of straight e85 and then inevitably end up somewhere where e85 is not available or im taking it on a long drive and would prefer the extra mileage over the extra power and just put in 93.

Later 2013s? So a part from 2014 would be good to use as a replacement right?

Yep. According to everything I read. I have an early 14 and all is good (only a sample of one but still all is good)

I have a early 2013 with 90K and the same problem has come up. How should i go about getting the part replaced. I was told by a my dealer that warranty only covers parts and labor to replace those parts. That was for a check engine light. They wanted 100+ dollars to scan the OBD2. So for this i would be charged for the 5 hours of labor just to find the issue. I do have extended warranty to 125K.

This should be a straight forward warranty repair with no charge to you. If they are trying to avoid covering it under extended warranty I would speak directly to Scion/Toyota.

Bit off topic but does anyone know if the twins are supposed to have a flap in the fuel filler neck(like pic below), mine doesn't and I was wondering if it should?
