Only deal breaker for me on this is the stupid transmission. I guess they think because it looks like a stick, enthusiasts will like it? No self-respecting engineer would come up with that.

I have a strong feeling this is just a feeler, and not something they are currently planning to make. Though I'd be really happy for a targa...

I looks like a car designed by a committee. If you want a manual 86, get one now before they announce the end of the MT.

i think people maybe reading to much into this concept. i think it may just be a preview of where Toyota might be going with in the future (drivetrain wise) rather than we're going to get a hybrid 86 next year.

remember the hybrid MR2 that everyone got really excited about?

I think this more of a function of the hybrid drivetrain. Than hate for the manuals.

Until I hear otherwise I've already assumed this car will replace the current 86. It doesn't make much sense for Toyota to make the 86 and this car at the same time (to me anyways).
AGREED!

Hey I'm totally ok with that if it allows me to commute to work all on electric when I feel like it. That rear passenger never help pay the gas bill anyways, that and I dunno how many people actually use that space for carrying people. I always thought most just leave the seat down for more trunk storage.

Honestly, I'm gonna push this one with the other 86 they cut up, the convertible, the Shooting brake... I'm sure they're others.

What I think Toyota is showcasing the most here in more that Transmission.

the industry is just shifting towards Electric and hybrids anyways. This one is obviously one of the better hybrid ideas kinda like the 918, The NSX etc. Imagine doing that in a 30K car. It wont be a CRZ Honda hybrid tech at the time wasn't very good it wasn't even good compared to a Normal Prius. This is coming from the people that really know Hybrid tech and they have a the 24 hrs car expertise.

I have faith we'll get something cool from Toyota soon : )

I would still like to have those body panels to bolt onto my MR2 Spyder.

Well shoot, I never even thought of it that way. No wonder they tried making it look like the original MR2. That makes a lot more sense.

This is something I might be interested in and there is not enough information to make any guess on whether this is something I'd buy.

I was referring to having a stick with an automatic transmission. If the actuation can be done by the car, rather than the driver, why in the world would you need a stick? Paddles are the right answer in that case. I drive a stick because I'm a control freak, not because of some insecurity requiring me to jerk a vertical stick around. Clearly Toyota marketing is having an identity crisis, having spent the better part of 2 decades pushing sheepmobiles and now being asked to 'appeal to the enthusiast' or something.

.

Stupid fake stick thing.
