Engine Swap for 2015 FRS

So my co-worker drives an automatic FRS and wants to do an engine swap. He knows next to nothing about cars or how to replace/install new parts. I told him I would help him do an engine swap if that is what he wanted to do. I have replaced my engine on my Celica and plan to do a whole new build for it soon. He told me he wanted to drop in a 2JZ, but after I told him we would not be able to just plug and play that engine he kind of backed off that idea. I was wondering what engine would be a great swap for not having to do any frame modifications? I'm looking at a few possibilities right now, but not knowing much about the FRS, I'm kind of stuck trying to find something that could work. I plan to rip out his automatic tranny and replace it with a manual tranny. Any suggestions?

What are your goals? What are your budgets? What are your skill levels?

For what it's worth, @Pure Automotive does in fact have a plug and play wiring harness (that is $6k), and, I believe just about everything else you'd need to drop a 2JZ into the FRS, failing that, plenty of other vendors make mounts and baubles that will make it work. Here's the thread

I do not think he wants to pay more than maybe 5k for an engine swap. He is being kind of cheap with this swap, which I told him already he should be looking to drop about $5k to $6k easy. His goal is to get a better engine in there then what he has now. He wants something a bit faster. My skill levels is being able to replace an engine, rebuild one if need be, pretty much any work I need to do on a car I can, expect weld. I have not welded anything in about seven years or so, and would not want to start again with welding on a car. My co-worker though he was barely able to manage a direct fit exhaust swap.

Any engine swap that's cheap will fail smog checks in counties that do them and the car will not be street legal. In two-three years depending on when he bought the car it will fail emissions unless the swap meets the requirements and he will be facing a significant fine along with a car that's no longer street legal.

Given budget, needs, your claimed capability & knowledge, and location, get a smog legal supercharger kit. ~50% power increase, reliable, plug and play in a weekend, street legal.

That is what I was recommending to him today. I think if he does not want the body or frame modified he would be better going with a turbo or like you said a supercharger kit. The area he lives in does smog checks so yea it would most likely fail smog unless he wanted to spend the extra cash for it. It honestly sounds like he might want to back out of this project after I told him more of what I have been reading up on his car.

Whats his reason for wanting to swap the engine when he doesn't know anything? Seems odd to me. I know people complain about its power but 5-6k wont cut it for a swap that will give him more power. Hes better off boosting the FA20 as others have recommended already.

What Strat said. It seems like this would be a much easier task for you and your friend to perform.

If your friend is looking for bigger power beyond what the CARB kits can provide and given his lack of knowledge, he may just be better off trading up to a more powerful car altogether.

Swap for an FA20. It`s direct bolt on, wiring and even the ECU is compatible.

I agree. B16 all the way. Especially if you can do it yourself (timing belt, water pump, clutch the whole works).
