It's just you.

The sound generator is a sealed diaphragm inside the "can". There is no air passing through the tube from the intake to the cabin so there is nothing being injected into your passenger cabin. The reason I know this is because I was examining the can after I removed the sound generator. While examining the parts, I noticed that Subaru labeled the can part of it "DAMPER". Looking inside as best as I could, I could see that the interior wall is like a rubber accordion material. Then I also noticed that the intake side of the DAMPER is the exact size of the other end of the hose and it would fit directly into the intake tube.

Soooooo...

It got me wondering, would mounting the can directly to the intake tube quiet the intake even more/better than just having the resonator chamber at the bottom of the intake tube? Or better yet, will it tune the intake for better response/power? Or is it just a coincidence? Or did Subaru intentionally do it to waste my time?

Has anyone tried it? If so, did it change anything?

I plan to mount it up there just for the heck of it. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a dyno to see if it makes any measurable difference...

I tossed the sound generator last weekend and was very happy with the results. It eliminates the buzz and instead you get to hear a much lower tone from the engine.

10/10, would rip out again.

Also, there was some sort of error with Home Depot's system when I went and the 3/4" plug rang up for 1 cent. Yes please!

Does anybody know the weight of the soundtube? I'm trying to decide if the work is worth the weight savings, vs just plugging up the cabin firewall hole.

Under a pound. It is just a piece of plastic tubing.

Ah. Thanks. Then I guess there's no real benefit to removing the whole tubing vs just pluggin up the port.

The one big benefit to removing it all is appearance. It makes a bigger difference than you would think to remove that clutter.

Has anyone who's removed their sound generator and kept it off for long periods of time experienced any issues?

I used a PVC 1" pipe cap. I put it in with the open end out to get as smooth of a flow as possible, just in case it mattered.

I haven't had any problems that I am aware of since removing my sound tube as well.

Have you noticed the decel rattle has gone away since you've removed your sound generator?

Sorry, but I can't say if it reduced/eliminated/prevented anything besides the superfluous sound in the cabin. I knew about the sound generator from even before I bought the car so I took it out almost immediately after buying the car so I don't know if doing so had any effect on anything.
