Is $1600 for a clutch replacement too much?

Wow that's called a rape.
My local shops quoted me $600. The dealer wanted about $900.

I bought a tranny jack at harbor fright for $100 and orded the new TOB, retainer clips, and grease for $75. $50 for new tranny oil, And did it myself. It was a huge pain in the ass taking it out (did not bought the tranny jack before) but its do able in a home garage and good tools.

If you have access to a lift it's way faster/easier. Leverage is the key. It's a pain in the ass trying to brake loose the drive shaft blots when your laying down.

I did my TOB a few weekends ago. It was by far the easiest tranny I’ve ever dropped. Did it in the driveway on jack stands and used a floor jack with a 2x6 on top in place of a legit tranny jack. For me the key was to jack the front of the engine to keep it from leaning forward or else it binds on the lower studs making it nearly impossible to slide the tranny off and back on.

I had no problem removing the prop bolts or putting them back on while on my back. I had the car up about 1.5ft and I am about 158lbs. It helps a lot if you can get your wife to put it in neutral and the set/unset the ebrake for you. My old wife would give me shit if I asked her to help with something like that. I traded her in for a newer, younger hotter model. Hahaha. She will sit in a chair next to the car for hours while I work. This is after 7 years together and 4 years married. She is my best friend. Anyways, sorry to ramble. 😀

Yes. Identical part. No clue why Subaru wants so much for it. There are a bunch of parts like this. Some are dramatically cheaper from Toyota and some are dramatically cheaper from Subaru. I got my car used and it had a huge thud when turning left to right. Turns out the previous owner changed the battery and didn’t put the tie down back on so the battery was flying back and forth. Luckily it was somewhat trapped by the chassis brace. So I had to order a new tie down. I priced it out at Toyota for something like $40 and only $12 at Subaru. So I make a point to check both when buying parts.

See now I would just pay someone to do it. I was proud of myself for putting in new headlights and exhaust bits, but taking the tranny out I think is beyond me.

Also, $1600 for replacing the clutch on a toyota that starts under $27k seems like way too much to me

It's all about the tools. I reckon with a hoist, most of us could do these jobs

Actually this job requires very basic tools. Nothing exotic at all. 4 jack stands. Floor jack (to jack the car but also to lower and raise the tranny). 10mm, 12mm, 14mm sockets in both deep and shallow along with a few extensions. A breaker bar. Torque wrench. A hoist is not needed. Oh and a funnel with long hose for putting new fluid in the tranny when you are done.

I guess if you aren't much of a car guy you may not have these basic tools and in that case you will just have to pay someone... or get a friend who is a car guy to come over with these items.

You could easily go to Harbor Freight and get all the tools needed for this job then order the clutch from Toyota and still come in under the $1600.

Hell if I lived in CT I would gladly throw these tools in the back of my tinny FRS trunk and swing by this guys place to do the job for $1600. Hahaha.

I just priced out an 'enthusiast package' clutch job, with a 2 day turn around in my shop, and I'd do it for $1,300 to get an idea of where your trusted mechanics price is.

Verus clutch fork and pivot, OEM TOB, OEM Pilot bearing, Motul Gear 300, Exedy stage 1 clutch kit, and a new OEM Exedy flywheel, OR an ACT HDSS with the ACT flywheel. Same price.

Less if you just want a stock clutch kit. You'd leave with a resurfacable OEM flywheel you could likely have resurfaced and sell for $75ish, and your car would be ready to hold the power a FI kit can make. No idea if you want to go down that road.

It sounds about right for someone who does not have experience with this specific platform and is adding time for research and being extra careful to get it right on the first pass, especially if he already has a waiting list.

If my suspicion was confirmed after a friendly conversation, I would gladly pay and take him out for beers afterward.

Neal can do them in his sleep.


As a point of reference I'll mention that I've done my own shit since I was old enough to hand a wrench to my dad.

Don't worry, my wife is HELLA pregnant so she requires too much attention to take on side jobs these days.

I can point you in the direction of a few enthusiast shops for future reference to avoid the chain shops who have no idea what they are doing.
