Not typically if it was designed to be a roadster in the first place. Both the BMW Z4 and Porsche Cayman gained weight over the their roadster versions.

I guess my point is a hard top Miata with 4 seats wouldn't be significantly lighter than the twins.

of course its heavier if you design a roadster and then make it a convertible but if you made the frs a convertible it would gain even more weight. i just dont really understand the point outside of a very narrow cherry picked situation to make the frs look good.

My argument is that there isn't a lighter 4 seat RWD car out there than the twins. One of the main reasons the Miata is lighter is because it's so tiny. The wheelbase on the BRZ is 10 inches longer. The Miata is a bit lower and narrower, and just over 12 inches shorter.

Mazda probably will never make a 2+2 Miata (I wish they would), but if they did, I'd bet the weight would be similar to the BRZ

I thought they already did. It was called the RX-8.

In my experience the rear seats in the twins are pretty useless though. Maybe if you are short and have small children they would be useful. It does give you that extra bit of cargo space I guess.

I use my backseat every day to get my daughter to school.

Even if I preferred the Miata I couldn't have made it work for my needs. No other sports car south of a 911 has a (preferably fold down) rear seat.

I use my backseat daily for my son too. The lotus Evora has a rear seat. Not sure if it can fit a rear facing seat though.

Not going to lie, if my head didn't stick out over the windshield I would have got a Miata over the BRZ
