I went to the Toyota dealer today to buy some parts and ask about the recall. They put me on the phone with someone in their call center and ended up scheduling an appointment this coming monday for the recall service. I was told that they were going to inspect the car and it should take about 4 hours.

4 hours seems short compared to what I've read so far (J02 recall notice says "Toyota [..snip..] covers 12.2 – 13.8 hours (depending upon vehicle configuration) of dealer labor expenses. ").

It also seemed strange that they said inspect and not fix. The person I spoke with didn't know much about the details, so I'm saving my questions for my appointment.

I was hoping to do my 60k service (spark plugs) and maybe have them fix the oil leaks (not sure if it's the timing cover or valve cover) if they're already going to have to take the engine out.

its monday so i guess there's not much to do now but show up for the appointment. I wouldnt be handing over my keys until i knew the dealer was aware they were removing the engine and replacing all 16 springs.

Does anyone have an estimate of the hours needed to change the direct injection seals? I am at about 45,000 miles and I am not having issues with them but if they are a regular source of issues I am considering having the dealer address them while the recall work is being performed.
I will be asking them to change the spark plugs while they are in there.

Dude, if you have the proper ECU tunes past the TSB dates on the forum you're fine

WOW! I brought my 2013 FRS to the Toyota Dealer in Englewood Cliffs, NJ on Dec 27. They gave me a 2019 Corolla loaner. Last Friday they called to say my car should be ready on Monday. How will I know if they did a proper repair? They have so much opportunity to screw up.

Wow I knew this would be an involved repair, but man. Also despite my earlier apprehension, I'm scheduled to drop my car off on Tuesday.

I know the master tech a little bit so I'll try to get as many details about what was actually done/ involved when it's finished.

Here's hoping I'm not opening a can of worms since I had no issues in 115k miles.

So I have a June 2013 build date car, but haven’t received anything in the mail and the dealership says I have “no open recalls”

Should I keep calling to confirm or does that mean I’m in the clear?

Welcome to the recall, there, aeschwartz -

Well, I reckon if the car runs OK and the engine don't leak and no codes are showing - you be OK -

that is...thorough.

reading through that, add-on services in order of simplicity:

- cam plates (MT - they already take these off)
- serpentine belt (they take it off)
- motor mounts (the engine is out)
- spark plugs (coil packs are removed)
- engine components (chain, heads, forged rockers, etc)
- clutch work (will be accessible on engine)
- header replacement (exhaust manifold will be detached from engine)
- direct injectors (engine out makes this easier, but intake manifold stays on for the recall work)
- transmission work (TOB/clutch fork) (i'm assuming a dealer would insist on dropping the transmission for this, not working on it under the car)

Anyone with a turbo kit getting the recall done? I got a letter and the process includes pulling out the whole motor, so wonder how they will handle cars with FI kits.
