Yes, that's the scca autocross (solo) rulebook.

I'm confused too. Are you saying that it's safer to remove airbags from the car? I could only see this being true if you have a full cage.

To be honest I don't really like the idea of swapping the front seats. If I'm only autocrossing the car, it kind of sucks that most of the weight reduction I can get comes from removing one of the biggest safety features of the car. Would love to lose that weight, but I can't see myself driving the car on the streets without those side airbags.

On a side note I never understood people who replace the front airbag with an aftermarket steering wheel.

The rules may change for cars with airbags in the seat. The minimum weight may also go up. This makes waiting a good idea if you're not after a nats trophy this year.

Forcing people to retain stock seats may be an issue if they want to run a 5/6 pt harness and Hans with a (class legal) roll bar. This would be the result of the proposed rule change if it happens.

Apologies for the confusion.

Seats may be nice and a common mod, but they are not necessary for a trophy or a win. No need to perpetuate dumb autocross perceptions.

Agree on not required.

I'm perpetuating nothing that I can tell. I'm not suggesting they're needed, but if you choose to swap seats for weight reductions, that's your call. 30-40lbs in this car isn't nothing and I can understand the choice... if you're competing at that level. Otherwise it's a "but I wanna" mod unless you also track, have roll bar and 6pt harness and hans at which point I'd consider it an important safety decision.

*shrug*

Brevity because typing on a phone probably doesn't help clarity.

Losing 20 lbs equates to thousands of a second. Maybe one hundredth.

Clean up your line and that time can be easily gained with 0 expenditure.

Like others said - nice to have possibly (I don't necessarily see why because these seats are nice already) - but not needed to win

I like having the seat simply for the lateral support. I don't like banging my knee's into the door/center console

I agree that driving can be the difference over some minor weight savings. That said, I am still pretty stupid about saving every last pound of weight, lol. Trying to get over that and focus more on driving (than I usually do).

More if you have heated seats... IIRC the drivers weighs in at 49lbs. Wouldn't surprise me to be remembering all wrong, I'm being lazy.

I can see why some people say changing seat is not useful, and they see no reason to allow that in STX, because of safety issue. But don't forget that the twins have really awesome seats to begin with. A lot of other cars (like 90% of them), have absolutely crappy OEM seat. So I can see why a lot of people want the possibility to change seats in ST.

Guys this is bigger than a simple seat change. Today it's seats that YOU don't care about, but the tendency to take away long standing rules in the fastest growing segment (ST) is the troubling thing. Some may care about seats, others about wheels, fuel. Individually, not a big deal, you say. But the initial draw was based on cool, but not over the top things you might do to your car in the quest for speed. After you've done those things and then they get taken away, you have other places to play, track days, nights, other less rule "changy" clubs. People go away and everyone loses. We get the club we deserve. Write your letters to the seb for or against.

Why don't they just say a replacement seat can't weight less than OEM? That way people can still change their seat out if they want (and just ballast the bracket or something to make weight), and the people who are worried about safety can keep their seats without a weight penalty.

I have heated seats. From what my setup was, it was only 9 lbs for me. Didn’t shave a lot of weight.

My stock (heated) seats are 43lbs. My Sparco EVO with buddy club rails is 28lbs. So 15lbs savings per seat.
