I don't think it's mandatory by law, but it is customary. A baseball player was caught doing 105 on the Beltway and he ended up serving 5 days in jail (though on weekends only, I doubt they would be so nice to a not famous person). And that was in NoVa, I hear judges in RoVa tend do be more harsh about it.

What is mandatory by law, is a reckless driving charge for 20 mph or more above the limit or 80mph or more, both being pretty ridiculous.

ps: apparently a lot ppl do that in the desert.... So..... It wasn't as bad. Just saying this to make myself feel better. I mean what kind cop parks in the middle of desert where it literally takes one hour + either way to find to any thing resemble a human settlement.
Sounds like an asshole cop looking for money on an empty street, if its like a desert you have almost no risk to anyone but yourself honestly.

Yep, I ran across that LEOs cousin a few years back, while crossing South Dakota. I swear, on that 350 mile stretch between Rapid City and Sioux Falls, there ain't much to see except The Badlands.

We was tooling along, top down, in our MX5, at triple digits, when my keen old squirrel hunting eyes caught glint off on a bridge over a gulch about a mile off into the distance. I sensed an ambush and got my machine slowed down.

Yep, a LEO had his patrol car in hull defilade behind the bridge abutment and had his sights and big ol radar gun pointing my way.

I miss the beauty of the state, but not the laws.

I find it humorous that it's possible your license gets out of jail before you do, 90 day max vs 12 months.

That website does not mention that now there is an interstate in Va with 70mph limit, meaning that being caught 10 mph above the limit there results in an automatic reckless driving charge.

We have a long stretch of freeway in Queensland (a state of Australia) that has no speed limit. That said I'd have serious doubts in taking a stock twin much past 150kph without at least some rudimentary functional aero.
