1300 miles in and it's pulling strong, sounds great under full load when driven hard and getting great mpg's but there's a funny rattly sound on cold startup that I don't think was there before. I could be just thinking too much into it though. It does go away in 2 or 3 seconds so maybe it's nothing. One thing that does have me bothered is they overfilled the oil, they always do and I've asked them not to but it falls on deaf ears. I've been checking the oil at each fill up and it looks great, clear with no sparklies in it (that I can see with my old guy eyes) but being a half inch over the full mark is disturbing.

@gravitylover yep I get cold start rattle too after startup. It only happens just the second I start the car, and doesn't always happen. Concerning, but I've heard way more startup rattle from a brand new 2019 Subaru (loaner car during recall), and read that its very common, so I suppose its something I can ignore. I did at one time have a startup rattle a couple days after recall that persisted with light revving, but I was on an empty gas tank and filling up with fresh gas stopped that - no idea except assuming I had bad gas.
I had worse noise before recall than after- my throw out bearing was junked ad the recall gave me an opportunity to get it changed for free. It revs very cleanly on nice smooth roads. At 110,886 miles today, about 5000 miles and 2 1/2 months since recall. |

Thanks for that. I am concerned but not that much. I listened carefully starting our Forester this afternoon and it does it too, then we got home and I started the old Outback that has just been sitting in the driveway for a year and a half with occasional starts and it does it also. I guess it's just a boxer thing so I'm not going to worry about it anymore. It's just weird that I hadn't noticed it before or if I did just passed it off and forgot. I'm good at forgetting things

Update: 6,000 Miles
Now over 6,000 miles since the recall was done! No issues or concern. I've been doing more spirited driving since I hit 3000 miles.

I've done about 14k miles since the recall.
Five track days and seven autox events. No issues. Even my recent oil analysis came back without any concerns.

Update - I did have the car back at the dealer because that noise just bugged me. They dropped the pan and the pickup was nearly clogged with debris so they cleaned and reassembled. Since then the noise has nearly gone away other than what's normal boxer clatter and it's running great.
I have about 2k on it since the pan cleaning and about 4k since the work was done. I don't drive it gently (most of the time). |

Make sure they wrote on your receipt that the oil pickup was clogged, so that when your engine DOES fail prematurely, you have a record of it. |
