No need, if you want to make the car work you can. Folks on here have done it. Our oldest son when an infant rode many times in my '85 MR2. Of course that was before we were told about the whole back facing seat thing.

Heck, worse case you take the passenger seat out.

First Time father advice

I have a 22 mo and it hasn’t been bad at all. Well worth it to have an enjoyable car. When he was smaller I had a rear facing seat that had a dock so it was super easy to get him in and out. He has put grown that seat and is now in a seat that doesn’t dock and doesn’t easily fit rear facing so I turned him around and he can just climb in the car and into the seat on his own. I then get in the driver seat and turn around and buckle him up. I have no regrets at all. It isn’t my primary car though. I also have an IS300 and a Suburban. The IS is rarely driven now.

Other notes. I can get a BOBS jogger stroller in the trunk. I run a lot so this was a big deal for me.

Well, only if you were directly related to @humfrz.. you could've been entitled to free childcare until your toddler is into his/her late teens..

Ahhhh…...the memories of vehicles and kids.

When I was a kid, I rode in the back of our farm truck, I learned real quick to stay seated on a 5 gal bucket, a sack of feed or a bale of hay. When it rained, I got to ride in the front and learned to put my arms on the dash when my dad cussed and slammed on the brakes.

Our first born rode on the little jump seat, in a woven laundry basket, in our MGB. Soft sided baby carrier worked well.

When my boys were younger, they rode on a plywood seat I made (to elevate them so they could see out) in my 1956 Ford pickup.

Also, when my boys were younger, on my motorcycle, I would strap them to me, the older one seated behind me and the younger one in front of me.

When my granddaughters were young, in my 2006 miata, one sat in the passenger seat, while the younger one laid the passenger seat footwell.

When my granddaughters were older they rode in the back seat of the FR-S - they learned to sit in the fetal position.

Guess what - we are all still alive!

Front or rear facing ain't gonna matter if you crash in an '85 MR2.

quite funny how so many folks here are against kids in their 86 or think it is impossible lol...the rear facing seats was the only real struggle (which still wasn't really a big deal) but after my kid was 3 years old or so it was much easier since he could climb in on his own and by the time he started school it was a piece of cake since he could open/close the passenger door by himself.

I did the kid duty in my FR-S. It's doable.
  • Only enough room behind the passenger seat, one kid. If there's an adult passenger in front of the kid, they better have short legs.
  • Front facing only, so your other car will be doing 100% infant duty until kid is old/big enough for a front-facing seat
  • Make sure the seat is not too high-base, or you will be bumping your kid's head into the ceiling each time. Our peg-perego seat was too high-up, but an evenflo that looked very wide was actually a great fit. The peg-perego went into the wife's hatchback.
  • There is a trick to getting the kid loaded. You have to tilt the passenger seat and slide it forward. Then, step in with your right foot to hold the seat in place. Then holding the kid flat and head-forward-and-up, bend over and load him into the seat. Your back should hit the ceiling. Practice this maneuver when your kid is calm and happy, I kid you not.
  • The above maneuver is awkward when there's snow and ice on the ground. Be careful.
  • It's actually a nice car for a kid since it's got a five-star safety rating, and the kid is close to the driver for any attention or soothing needs.
I ended up trading it in for a pickup truck anyway, but that was a combo of kid duty needs and wanting to pursue different driving.

Hah, point taken but you'd be surprised how much damage it could absorb. I was run off the road in my MR2 and hit a bridge abutment at about 25MPH with the front left corner of the car. It was back on the road about 3 weeks later good as new (I drive it another 80,000 miles) , and I suffered no injuries.

And no, I wouldn't want to do it again. Its a miracle it wasn't more serious, not my day to die.

I also have a '19 Corolla hatch in manual which will be the main baby carrier but I plan to also use the FRS if need be.

Also FYI: My wife is due in early June, so any advice in helping with my wife's pregnancy is also more than welcome.

Sounds like it's not too late to return it...

That would be my advice

My wife is 5’6” mostly legs and sits in the passenger seat with a rear facing seat with no problem. I found it easier and quicker to plop the seat on the base in my car than it was to climb up into are Suburban to dock the seat. There is also a trick to locking the passenger seat forward so it doesn’t slide back while docking the seat. You pull the side lever and slide it forward and then press down lightly on the bar that you use for moving the seat front and back. The seat will stay forward until you pull back up on the bar. I also didn’t climb into the car at all to drop the seat on the base. I posted pictures on my wife sitting in the car with my son in the back somewhere on this forum. I guess I could throw up a video of me plopping the seat back there. It’s really not bad assuming you’re not completely out of shape with no core strength at all.

We had a situation where we were down to my wife's SUV and the brz for a couple months and it was miserable with a 2 year old. With that rear facing seat and base I dont see how people do it. We have two children now and I would never put them both in the car.

More power to you if you can, but I have a crew cab truck as a daily now and it's so much easier than anything else we tried. When they're all forward facing I'm sure it gets easier.

Having said that I loved being able to basically look at my son by turning my head sideways (those car seats are huge) and he would tell me to go fast. Or you could see him in the corner of your eye watching you shift gears. It definitely gets more fun as they get older.

The first year is going to be rough for you in general. Stick it out, once they start sitting up and crawling it starts to get really fun when you teach them things. When they start jumping and talking to you.... just wait.

Congratulations man!
