well what are you gonna do, open up the box and replace the synchros? the synchros are fine, AISIN has had plenty of experience making gearboxes...and as far as fluid is concerned, do you really think what the factory fills it with would be that compromised compared to the off shelf stuff we can buy? if you read the threads about people changing fluids, plenty of those folks say they still get crunchy/notchy shifts after changing the fluid, etc.. just another function of the car where function takes precedence over comfort/NVH/etc

Concerning the synchros no I would not do that, unless Toyota paid for it. I had (can’t remember the gear now) synchros replaced on my WRX under warranty. That 5 speed had a rep for being fragile, I always shifted more carefully because AWD. Idiots launching it from a stop would grenade the transmission, or adding a bunch of power would destroy it. I remember swapping it for the STi transmission was a popular option.

About a fluid change, welllllll, Toyobaru knows best for most things. Many “upgrades” for the twins aren’t always a true upgrade. But Toyobaru also has price points and service intervals to consider. So a company like Motul or Amsoil can make a product that can outperform OEM stuff. I’m not saying those are necessarily better, but I think it’s worth a try. The BITOG forum is a minefield of conflicting information and opinions. Anything to do with oil and transmission fluids involves voodoo and black magic.

It is a good car. The biggest factor when I went with the CRZ was I had a 42 mile one way commute at the time. 6 months after I bought it my company moved airports and my commute went to 19 miles. I only had 25K on the car after 4 years.

1. Do you experience a lot of crunchy gear changes from 1 to 2? I find the 1-2 shift especially tricky, which is unfortunate because of how many times you make that shift.

- it's a very mechanical feeling box, stock fluid is meh. Currently on Amsoil MTG 75W90 and it's fine imo.

2. Is the “tractor” sound normal when you are in a higher gear at lower rpm’s? My car really sounds like a little tractor in that situation. Lol It’s especially noticeable when you are in say 2nd gear slowly moving through a parking lot.

- I wouldn't call it a tractor sound, but yes it does have a particular sound to it if you're pulling low revs like that.

3. What is the consensus on short shift kits? I’m worried about spending a bunch of money on one and not being happy with it. I added a oem TRD shift knob, which surprisingly feels lighter than the stock one. I really like it though.

I don't like short shifters but I like a heavy shift knob. I guess I wouldn't like the TRD.

4. Is removing the clutch assist spring a helpful thing? I agree that the clutch takeup is a little strange, but my issues aren’t with the clutch pedal.

Clutch assist spring has to go. The clutch on this car is pretty light even without the spring, all the spring does is make it harder to modulate the friction because the feedback is deader than the dead pedal on an automatic.

My 1-2 was like that on the street. Hot on the track it was smoooth. Don't worry too much about it

Oil is oil.
Marketing is marketing.
People who think changing to a different brand of oil and thinking it makes a big difference are only fooling themselves.

And wasting their money.
And don't even get me started on my opinion of buying anything that has TRD on it.

next you're going to tell me that rubber is rubber, and all tires are the same.

or all french fries are the same because they're all fried potatos.

the base product oil might be the same, but the other stuffs they put in there, friction modifiers and other voodoo make the different oils different.

different additive packages will result in different wear profiles.

I get your point but IMO, meh. 80% technique and 10% confirmation bias.

The CRZ is a cool car for that purpose, and if you don’t need much space. I like the looks of them also.
