I'm actively looking for a 2020 unit. If I get my hands on one, I'll report back on how plug and play it is.

Like mentioned, the backup camera is simple a RCA jack. It doesn't care whether the camera is on the back, in the mirror, or in space; it'll work all the same.

Just go aftermarket. With YouTube and the internet the install was simple. A couple of hours. I did crutchfield and paid 25 bucks for them to do the wiring harness. I did have to flash the Idata link but it was easier. Just plug everything in. Plus it looks factory. I got the pioneer 2550nex.

The crutch field harness service is soooo worth it.

Personally I think even the best aftermarket headunits still look ~10 years behind quality OEM units. Additionally, it's tough to find a price-right, large screen aftermarket headunit with an analog volume knob etc.

To each their own.

Check out the Sony AX-5000, no volume knob (buttons), but it looks damn near factory.

How is the UI? My 3 year old pioneer is so laggy even out of the box when I installed it brand new.

Super snappy and it doesn’t look flashy like most aftermarket units. It doesn’t have a ton af unnecessary features like them either, so less to slow it down. I’ve had 5 aftermarket radios in my life and this is the first one I truly like better than the OEM one in every single way.

No volume knob is a deal breaker for me. So annoying on the Type R that they brought it back.

It depends. I too was a fan of knobs, but the 2015 OEM HU here in the middle east has multi-finger gestures. Just slide two fingers right to increase the volume or left to decrease. It works for other functions too like Mute, previous / next track, etc.

Stopped missing the knobs once you get the hang of it.

Just FYI, bought new straight from the parts counter would be a huge stretch. The 2019 headhunt is listed at $2195.68 here, so I could only imagine the 2020 would be comparable:

I have the same question since I have a 2017 with the camera view in the head unit. It might be nice to get the new head unit with CarPlay, but not sure if the back up camera will display in it for me. My mirror is not capable of it.

Bumping this earlier question. Has anyone out there tried to install the new 2020 86 head unit into a 2017 or 2018 to get Apple CarPlay? My biggest concern is if the new head unit can display the backup camera, as our mirrors can not do it.

And to get ahead of it, yes, I know I can just get an aftermarket from Crutchfield, but I’m curious about the factory head unit.

The real question is if there is any brand new owner of a 2020 Toyota 86 willing to pull out their OEM head unit and take pictures so we can confirm if the connectors are different.

My guess is that the GPS navigation unit that typically sits underneath will no longer be needed. So there shouldn't be those extension module connectors on it.

At the very least, it should have the following connections (based on my 2018 head unit):

* Antenna
* USB/AUX
* Toyota OEM power and speaker connectors (6 pin + 10 pin)
* Microphone + Steering Controls (28 pin)
* Camera stuff (24 pin)

I'm personally trying to find a review of the navigation/stereo on youtube, but no one is talking about it. I don't need the camera stuff since I'm retro fitting it into an ae86.
