NYC, credit score was 760-790 range (according to actual reports, not credit karma bs), only driver in family, only driver on policy, brand new BRZ.

$480 a month from when I was 23 until I turned 25.

I was 25 when I bought my brz 2017, but luckily my birthday was literally a day after. Clean record (no tickets in the past 3 years), Northern California, Age 26, 7 mile daily commute, in a family plan came out to a little over $1100 a year if I can recall. My family is good friends with the manager at the Allstate we get our insurance at, he moved some things around so that helped a little bit.

My rates didn't really change much after turning 25. That was a few years ago, and I'm still paying about $100/month with Geico to insure my 2017 BRZ + 2010 tC with my wife also insured on each car.

I know it's meaningless to ask what other people are paying for insurance on their BRZ. However, I think it might be interesting to compare your BRZ to other cars you are insuring. For example, I just asked my agent for a quote for a BRZ. Sadly it will be almost $600 for 6 months. That's more than my wife's 2014 IS350 ($45k+, 300 HP, RWD sporty sedan, driven more annually) and my Evo X! This doesn't make any sense, unless the BRZ has a lot more accidents than other cars.

I was shocked my insurance went DOWN 5% when I went from 2013 tC to 2017 86.

That makes no sense either. A 2017 86 is definitely worth more than a 2013 tC. Both are considered cars driven by younger drivers (high risk), except one is a RWD sports car albeit entry level, the other one is just a Corolla with 2 doors made to look sporty.

It's based in part on expected value of future claims. By way of overly simplistic example, supposed all cars either survived unscathed or were totaled in wrecks. If you were driving a $20,000 car, but half of that model usually end up being totaled, the insurance company would expect to pay out $10,000 on policies like yours on average. You may be in the half that doesn't get smashed, but they have to charge you enough to cover the expected value of what they'll have to pay out to balance out the half whose claims are more than they paid in. Maybe they would charge everybody who has that same car model $10,500 to make sure they make a profit overall.

However, if you were driving a $50,000 car that had a 1% chance of being totaled, that expected value would only be $500. They could charge those drivers $1,000 premium and still make the exact same profit.

So maybe some of these more expensive cars are less likely to be in accidents. Perhaps more expensive cars are generally purchased by more responsible people.

Additionally, a cheaper car could actually end up costing the insurance company more for the same damage. Suppose you had a $20K car that had $15K in damage, and you were in a state with a 75% total loss threshold. The insurance company would have to total your car and pay you the $20K value plus tax, tag and title fees. That might add up to $26K or $27K.

But suppose instead that you had a $50K car with $15K in damage in that same state. That wouldn't reach the 75% threshold, so the insurance company would fix it for $15K instead of paying you $27K to total it.

There is a ridiculous number of factors that go into calculating risk. That's why actuaries take up to nine exams over the course of decades in some cases to be qualified to calculate those risks. That's also why they're paid very well. Otherwise who the hell would ever become an actuary?

Any discussion of insurance rates on an individual level is really a huge pointless gesture. Yet, these threads pop up once every 2-3 months and we then spend 20-40 posts trying to justify our own rates.
