The interior quality in those cars is horrible. Pieces fall off left and right. Plus they look very dated, and clean ones will cost a premium.

Have thought about letting go the fr-s for a while to free up some cash for an e36 m3 for a while. A major repair/maintenance can run to 5 g's if your not careful though. There was a nice down-to-earth example a while ago with blown engine for 6-7 g's a while ago.

Integra Type-R is a bit similar to OP's vehicle. Decent back seats, and a major repair isn't all that bad.. Would like to see these things always worth 5g's if taken care of for life?

I can overlook a slightly flimsy interior if I can find a mechanically solid M3. And I think the exterior looks fine.

If I find an M3 I will have it inspected thoroughly. And the ITR is like a 5-horned unicorn here. Pretty much not going to happen, and it's not different enough from my EM1 to justify anyways.

Right now I'm eyeing these cars, all manual:

Subaru Legacy GT sedan/wagon (semi-unicorn status)
Lexus IS300 (semi-unicorn status)
BMW E36 M3 coupe/sedan (likely a money pit but most fun to drive)
Acura TSX/TL (the "safe" choice)
Saab 9-3 Viggen (cool in a really weird way)

I will need to start test driving soon!

Saab 9-3 Viggen. Cool, weird and very difficult to find. Almost as rare as the Subaru Baja saw today.

Would not be surprised the IS300 will not achieve 20mpg. Toyota was trying to create a "clean-burn" engine back then?

Out of all those cars I would easily take the TL. You get a little bit of everything - performance, luxury and looks.

No Toyota was sticking the 2JZ in everything back then. I miss those days.

E36 M3/4/5

Don't discount it until you drive one! It'll win for sure. If you do the small repairs and most of the maintenance yourself then it's not that expensive. The engine is also bulletproof.

So no, not looking to get back into one of those.
Hmmm...

I think you're better off with a Corolla or a Saab 9-3.
