I contacted Toyota customer service and spoke with a Scion rep there. I called because I have a replacement engine that I had gotten for another FRS that has 65,xxx miles on it, and since it was built in the time frame, I wanted to see if it would qualify.

I was told that if the engine had been replaced, it would not qualify for the recall
What if the dealer replaced the short block because rod bearing issue ? I have a brand new short block installed by dealer under warranty few months ago.

Talk to them but most likely you would already have the later springs. All depends on when the short block was made though.

And potentially they will not have sourced the engine from a used source. If it is new, then they also have a history of work performed

A "short block" is crankcase without heads.
A "long block" is crankcase and heads.

So no, a short block would not have a fresh set of springs, even if the heads were taken apart for the rebuild process, it's original springs should have been reinstalled if there was no notice to do otherwise at the time.

Need to get vacuum pump & valve cover gasket replaced, 120k service (spark plugs, etc) done... should be cheaper to wait till there's a fix for the recall and get it all done at once right? :P

That's what I'm hoping. I know it's time to change the plugs and I'm hoping they only charge for parts and a minimal labor charge rather than the regular $300.

When the piston let go in my v6 Ranger, I got a mid-block...crankcase and one head.

A half hour of work while they're doing the recall? They take the plugs out anyway, there's no way there should be any more labor to put in different plugs than what they took out
