I would contact Toyota at the corporate level to confirm. As long as you follow what is required per the manual you shouldnt have issues with warranty. For a first change though doing it early isn't a bad idea as wear is higher on new parts so it'll get dirty a bit faster then normal but you still need the correct info for all the changes after that.

On a side note how did a new car not come with an owner's manual?
I think I will do the first oil change at 10,000km then if I track a bit in the future I will do them at more frequent intervals.

It came with the owners manual which says the specifications of the oil but makes no mention of the frequency to change it. Toyota says all post 2016 models require oil changes every 16,000km, this is been said by the service people at the dealership and the maintenance guide online at Toyota's website. Although on at Toyota Canada the maintenance schedule for the 86 is incomplete and they certainly don't provide one when you purchase the car. I asked the dealership as well and they have no idea the maintenance schedule for this car as they cannot find it either.

I'm kinda curious why Toyota has decided after 2016 to tell everyone that oil change is only required every 16,000km...I feel like probably nothing changed at a hardware level, may be R&D recommendation.

I have a feeling that someone is misunderstanding something along the line.

My 2013 (US model) included a "Warranty & Maintenance Guide" along with the "Owners Manual".

I suggest you ask your dealer for a copy of the warranty and maintenance guide. If they don't know what your talking about ....... ask to speak to his/her supervisor ...... just keep going up the line until you get something in writing that tells the maintenance for your car.

Yeah. Idk the laws in Canada but to enforce warranty reqs I would imagine they need to tell you what those reqs are

With this newfangled thing called the internet, Toyota allows you to get your own.

http://www.toyota.com/owners/resourc...icleList=false

Of interest to this discussion is the warranty & maintenance booklet, US version linked below with stated oil & filter change intervals exactly the same as before at 7.5k miles or 7.5 months. At roughly 12k km OP I think your dealership isn't giving you accurate data asking you to wait untl 16k km (10k miles) for an oil change. Likely a result of Toyota Canada trying to cut service costs.

Here's the Canadian manual, unfortunately they do not seem to make the Canadian maintanence intervals public instead directing you to some funky third party site...
