Stick with Toyota FR-S so as not to alienate current FR-S owners. Don't love it, but didn't love the name "Scion" as a car make anyhow.

- "Toyota FR-S" doesn't roll off the tounge like "Scion FR-S". Too many syllables in "Toyota"

- "GT-86" has always been a little odd because the car is far from a G.T. "GT" in the case of the global version refers to a trim level anyhow. The car is an "86".

-"86" seems to be best in the spirit of the car, but kind of restricts it to a square 86x86 bore & stroke.

- "FT-86" was the name of the concept. Doesn't "F" stand for "Future". Doesn't really make sense either.

86 restricts the engine bore x stroke? 86 pays homage to the spirit of the AE86, less so the borexstroke.

Never liked GT86 either, but I bet it's what we end up with.

Let FR-S die with the brand, it won't be a Scion anymore.

OldSkool is right, "FR-S" seems quite tacky and should die with scion and start anew as the GT86, the other cars being rebadged that are surviving the transfer are the iM which is the Auris everywhere else, and the iA which is a mazda 2 underneath, the only name that should stay is the iA in my book

Well, there was the Toyota MR-S in Japan. It works.

Still in support of 86 for the name, if they do plan to change it at all. I doubt it, given that it fits well within the Toyota brand already.

So why call it a GT when it's clearly not a GT?

Quote:
A grand tourer (Italian: gran turismo) (GT) is a performance and luxury automobile capable of high speed or spirited long-distance driving. The most common format is a two-door coupé with either a two-seat or a 2+2 arrangement.
The term derives from the Italian phrase gran turismo, a tribute to the tradition of the grand tour, used to represent automobiles regarded as grand tourers, able to make long-distance, high-speed journeys in both comfort and style. The English translation is grand touring.
Whereas FR-S (Front engine, Rear drive, Sport or Sportscar), speaks directly to what the car actually is.

Good point about the MR-S and that seems to work. 86 is ok as well, but seems like a needless change in North America where people have had a few years to begin to understand what an FR-S is.

To be fair, GT86 is a viable name because it's already used in Europe and is the popular term to refer to any Toyota twin not badged as an FR-S, even if it's a JDM model.

Still in support of 86, though.

In the case of the FR-S, the only member of the Scion family we really care about, a Toyota spokesperson confirmed to Jalopnik that the name of the car will be... wait for it... wait for it... the Toyota FR-S.

Never know the credibility of a "spokesperson" tho.
