Miata has been around since the '80s and still doesn't make 200 bhp.

Remember Miata is ~400lbs lighter and is now close to our horsepower levels without a stock torque dip.

And im not talking people need a crazy power bump but something real like Miata did with 25hp and no other real changes to the car.

Miata = Same great Chassis, +25 hp
Toyobaru = Same great Chassis, More lips, wings, bodykits, bigger heavier wheels, decals, badges, fuzzy interior parts ect.

It only took the Miata 4 generations spread over 30 years to get to where it is now so the 86 has time time to play with.

Miata is jumping from 155 to 181hp, +26hp because they invested in the engineering of the motor.

We got +5 hp from tweaking the intake and exhaust manifold with no research into developing a better motor.

32K for 230hp stock car would be worth
35K for those that want all the stick-ons kits and stripes

Just one more final cash grab by toyobaru
Although I agree with you, I'm feeling that maybe the Miata engine some more optimizing room (151hp from 2.0L) vs the Toyobaru engine had already 200hp and high redline since the beginning. There have been some internal changes but thinking they may be for reliability and not power adders.

I applaud Mazda for pepping up their engine shortly after bringing the car to market, or were they already researching and waiting for release when they felt it was sufficiently mature.

good point that Mazda could have under engineered from the start to allow themselves an upgrade when the time to strike and take the market of sales. They realized last year the best toyobaru could do was ad a Final drive and sqeeak out 5hp

I would have been fine with Toyobaru doing something similar to the S2000 and increasing to 2.2L with a nice HP and fat TQ boost and loose a little redline.

Until recently they were roughly equal in power to weight ratio. Their performance was equal in every real-world comparison I've ever seen (0-60, 1.4 mile, skidpad, lap comparisons, etc.). I'd just like the 86 to keep up in this modest metric.

But I don't want to wait 30 years for an 86/BRZ that competes with a 2019 Miata.

I don't think their performance was equal. Maybe only on the 0-60, cause of the weight advance of the mx-5. On skidpad and lap time comparisons the issue on our cars was the stock tires. Why don't we see a comparison now between the tS and a similar spec'd mx-5? I think there was an mx-5 version with Bilstein's. Maybe the car journalists love more the Mazda's than the Subaru's and the Toyota's?

It is nice to have another special edition, but it still doesn't make me trade in my 10 series with stage 2 and E85!

Nice that Toyota is ditching the Primacy HP's in favor of Pilot Sport 4 tires, just not that fond of the TRD body kit or rainbow TRD graphics on the sides...

Then it would cease to be a TRD Edition

I've got no objective data to share with you, but when I was considering buying this car, I read every article I could get my hands on and watched a ton of youtube videos. Every one of them seemed to come to the same conclusion: buy the 86 if you want more practicality and a stiffer ride. Buy the Miata if you want a convertible and more commute-friendly ride. The performance is generally equal.

EDIT:

A HOF SCCA driver takes both around the track and they're separated by 0:00.13 (Miata 1:30.39 - 86 1:30.26).

A bit more power from the factory would be nice but am not counting on that. Most don't care anyways and they know it.

If one wants more power there are a ton of options to choose from. NA, SC and Turbo's. The choices and avenues that can be taken are mind boggling and more will coming in the future. ITB's are now out...

I feel very fortunate to own this car.
