My family is slowly moving that way, and I'm not sure I object all that much.

That said, we put an awful lot of thought into the gifts themselves, and the bags are re-used so much more easily. Some of the bags we use are cloth, and intended for re-use. And yes, we even reuse paper, some of it for years. There's a whole set of weird boxes that make the rounds every year... you get one, you're required to gift in it the next year.

We also do this thing where we open one gift at a time. Starting with the youngest in the room, you pick one at random (no looking, no choosing) and hand it to the intended recipient, and each person picks in turn. Lots of food. Plenty of drink. Music. Storytelling. And relaxing. It can take us all day, and that's kinda the point.

I'm not one to get too hung up on how a thoughtful gift has been strategically hidden from my sight until the moment it is revealed... however that is.

Hell, the anvil wasn't even wrapped.

Enjoy the connections. Don't fret the trappings.

Ahhh, watching my parents open up their Christmas gifts last night was so satisfying. Amazing to see my dad open up his gift and immediately start wearing it (a sweater) and continue wearing it this morning. And for my mom to also do the same with the scarf I bought her.

Christmas is so much more awesome when you become an adult and care more about giving gifts than receiving them

I bought most of my own gifts. In fact @Ultramaroon and @bcj were both with me when I got several of them. The wife wrapped them up all nice though.

Not allowed. Not only that, if the giver happens to be out of the room, you wait...

I usually don't even remember what I get, but I do remember whether I felt I did a good job finding nifty things to give...

Yeah my immediate family has done similar for the past several years. We usually do the storytelling first (religion based or otherwise) and then we either had the youngest start or we’ve done things with a completely random order, one at a time. I think it helps keep things focused especially so you know where you got certain gifts from and can properly thank the giver at the time. But it also stretches the time out longer for a more enjoyable and memorable experience.
