Good practice as stated above is just learn how to make the car move forward from a stop with ZERO throttle. Not that hard and shows you exactly where your clutch is grabbing.

Also remember you must decide what you want from your shift.. A fast shift is still jerky (A glorious forward-moving jerk I must ad) and a comfortable shift will never be fast.

Beauty of the twins is they will teach you how to drive properly whether you like it or not.
Whatever. It made shifting easier for me so whatever.

I'm sure it did. Those mods might be useful for someone who already knows but just irrelevant for someone who has no experience. Learning how to shift properly is the easier route to take here.

Jeepers! The only time I actually think about shifting is when I'm trying to mimic an automatic just for fun. I did notice a difference from my previous 5-speed. though. The gears are noticeably closer in the 6-speed, which for me in normal driving means use first gear just to get off the line, and upshift before you even cross the intersection. Also, you'll notice that stop-and-go traffic is much smoother in second if you don't actually have to stop. First gear is horrible for this. Likewise when slowing down to stop: first gear, in my book, is to be avoided--in this case, neutral is your friend. It's why we have brakes. It all becomes second nature in time, but if you really need the car to tell you when to shift, set your rev-minder to flash the red light around 5500 or so, when the power returns after the dip, and just shift when you see it (for upper gears only, of course). That should help you feel like a sportscar driver with just open road in front of you!

I recently purchased a '17 BRZ and cant shift 1->2 and sometimes 3rd smoothly to save my life. Granted it's my first (standard) car.

What really bugs me is that I currently drive a 13-speed big rig and can shift through to highway speeds without waking a baby. Now the transmission IS "unsynchronuzed", so referring to OP, It is mandatory I wait for rpm to drop to match the desired gear at speed or you simply wont shift at all. -insert grinding noises-

Maybe that's my problem, that I feel the need to wait on the car before shifting instead of just doing it. idk -send help

Get the STI short shifter & change fluid to motul. Trust me you won’t even look back.

The short shifter gets rid of all the grinding/crunchiness.

Is it the clutch, or the gearshift that's giving you fits? Although I agree with @chaoskaze, the downside is a noticeable increase in gearbox clatter. The syncros take upwards of 8-10 thousand miles before they start grabbing effectively. I suggest waiting through that period and deciding then if you really want to change the lube.

If it's the clutch, is it because of this?

I would say It's more-so the clutch and rhythm. I'm so used to "catching" the shift in my big truck and smoothing out the engagement with throttle.

It's also an unfamiliarity with synchronized transmissions; I'm not used to just putting the car into any gear I want, any time I want haha. Feeling out the car requires a focus in aspects that I'm not used to.

Ex: big rig can be clutchless shifted (floating gears) and your timing is what dictates a smooth shift. That timing can then be applied to using the clutch and is just as smooth either way.

but the "timing" is due to physically waiting on the truck to drop in RPM before you can shift.

obv in a car you don't have to wait on putting the car in gear.

The link you posted about the clutch fooling you is an issue for me, yes. Couple with what I stated above (sorry I didnt use the reply function on your post) it can be a janky jerky nightmare sometimes haha.

Actually, the two are analagous. Once you get the feel of it being more picky, it's easy to clutchless shift the same way you shift that tractor.

Another thing about this transmission when it's cold, is how quickly it stalls as soon as you disengage the clutch in neutral. It's like molasses. When you upshift, especially from first to second, if you don't get through neutral quickly enough you lose that match and have to really lean into the syncro to get it spinning back up fast enough. I usually double clutch if I miss.

I guarantee you would appreciate the clutch cylinder mod. Try it.

What is clutch cylinder mod? Adjusting the clutch rod at the base of clutch pedal?
