I have 2014 FRS manual - It's quieter than my corolla. So quiet, I crack my window so I can hear the rev's. I like to keep my eye on the road not the gauges all the time.
I'm going with the TRD exhaust with a catless front pipe.... nice sound and neighborhood friendly.

Did some tests today with a good Professional "sound level meter":

At 130KMH with speed regulator on and on flat road it reads 69DB.

At 110KMH with speed regulator on and on flat road it reads 62DB.

The road was of average quality, I know of smoother ones around, I'll try to test later.

Nothing to worry about I'd say...

You can hold a calm/quiet conversation in the cabin while driving, that's another way to measure (the 5th Gen Celica gave me a soar throat on long drives with friends).

Thanks for posting this.
we need a more standardized, objective way to measure sound levels in this discussion.

I've got Eagle F1 Asymmetrics and I also think the car is too damn loud. I tried spraying my front fender liners with that 3M rubberized coating but it didn't do jack. I've been meaning to follow the advice on sound deadener showdown but I'm looking for a local source of MLV.

This may sound crazy but my first 2013 FRS was so loud and was so stock no modification what so ever. When I trade in for a 2014 I notice how super silence this other car is with the same no modification Notting bone stock. Maybe I got the first loud lemon car lol

It's almost certainly tire/road noise as on freshly paved roads the noise is about half as loud as on older roads.

Anyone who thinks this car is quiet, even stock, is crazy.

I'd recommend Raam Audio. They don't have a MLV product, but they have a butyl based deadener and closed cell foam combo that seems to work well. I've installed their product in my old Lexus.

Yes I get tinnitus from the fr-s it's getting to the point where this car may sit in the driveway except for track days and autox.

It's a combo of things that make this car loud. Lack of deadening, the stock exhaust, and the loud stock tires.

After searching and reading many threads, MLV under the rear seats, under the front foot wells, and under the tire may be the best bet.

By far the loudest combination is the current config listed last. The PSS's are the loudest perceived part of the package. They rumble and roar over anything but freshly paved surfaces in the dry. Normal conversation is nearly impossible above 70 mph. Great dry and wet grip, ride quality and feedback, but I won't be doing anything longer than day trips in the car without ear protection.

Anyone running ZII's have noise comments?
My Star Specs were definately loud on the pavement and got progressively louder as they got older and lumpier, but my ZII's were quiet when first put on, now five months and several track days later - still quiet.

Before anyone ask, my mods:
-Greddy SP Elite axleback (very quiet)
-Eibach Sportlines
-Work Kiwami CR 18x8.5/18x9.5
-Michelin Pilot Super Sports 225/40/18 & 245/35/18

Somehow this combo (along with the lack of sound deadening) produces 85+db on the highway at my typical cruising speed of 120km/h (~75mph).

Every since I got the car I've noticed more ringing in my ears than normal, like I just got back from a concert when I was in fact just coming back from a buddy's place. I didn't want to blame it on the car, but then I started measuring the SPL of other things I do. Just driving this car on the highway rates as one of the loudest things I do. The only 2 louder things were a metal concert (92+db) and my stereo at home cranked to "drunk" listening levels (88+db).

Since I measured this I've started wearing ear plugs on trips longer than 30 mins, but that's super impractical and annoying.

Is anyone else's car that loud? Is it the wheel/tire combo? I feel like it's worse with my summer tires on, but I won't be able to validate that until next winter.
Don't worry, the tinnitis will go away, permanently. Your ability to hear the frequencies the ringing occurs at will also go away.

My 95 mustang GT with an H exhaust with dual glass packs was the loudest car I've ever had.

It was bad enough that when my wife was driving it to work, she made me buy a third car(I think she really just wanted a new car) because she couldn't stand how loud it was.

It was the best sounding car I've ever owned though. That meaty rumble was something to behold when revving...

Jaden

p.s. I actually I take that first part back, the LOUDEST car I ever had was a 74 super beetle with a stinger tail pipe, not muffled at all...lol...Going through a tunnel or under pass was insane... Not once was I pulled over for it though...

If you think you have tinnitus SEE A DOCTOR!
Noise exposure tinnitus is generally brought on by prolonged exposure to loud noise and would not be expected to be caused by the short period of time you would spend in your car. There are dozens of other things that could be causing it and you should have it checked right away as some of them can be very nasty.

Both the Ontario MOL and U.S. OSHA safety agencies have very strict rules on how long it is "safe" to be exposed to loud noise. Unless you are spending a longggggg time in your car every day (must admit it is tempting sometimes) I doubt that the car is the main source of your issue. It could be aggravating something else though so get it checked!

Love the video. Other then the fogs and the license plate my car looks exactly the same. As I also have the TRD exhaust I now know what I look and sound like from the outside of the vehicle.
