Or at least a more reasonable non slammed roadworthy version of that.

pretty sad that the baja wasn't more popular, maybe something like that could have become a reality which really isn't too far off of something like a subaru brat..

The Baja wasn't more popular because it was trying to be too many things and ended up being bad at all of them. The bed area was too small to really make it of any use as a pickup. But since it had a bed, you didn't have a real trunk to lock up your valuables. It had four doors for more... passengers, but that just made it look all out of proportion. They thought maybe people might buy it who wouldn't buy a more traditional El Camino-style coupe utility like the BRAT because of how limiting a two-seater can be, but in the end it wasn't very attractive because it had too many conflicting design goals.

We don't see any coupe utilities now because the auto manufacturers think (not without reason) that Americans who want truck beds are also going to not want to be sitting low down in traffic and will prefer to be raised up like a truck. But there's still a niche market out there for them. I think GM could have sold that Holden here in numbers that would make it profitable, just not with the return they require internally to give something like that a green light. GM can be a bunch of serious cowards when it comes to doing anything uncertain.

Fiat has one they sell in Europe and Mexico, so it wouldn't surprise me to see them try to reskin it as another sad imitation of a Jeep.
