Does this nut that everyone has issues with, is it a regular nut or a locknut? Anyone tried a locknut?

I installed a TRD short shifter on my Supra back in the day (mkiv model but 5speed) and there was either slop or it became too tight when over tightening the nut. It also had a tendancy to get loose unless it was tightened down tight. Cant recall if loctite was used but maybe a nylong lock nut and some nylon washers or something could work.

It's not a nut, it's a bolt. It backs out of the threaded adapter:

Did anybody else have difficulty getting the shift control shaft thru the adapter? I saw that there is a tiny o-ring inside the adapter where the shaft connects. I had to use channel locks to get it all the way thru to get the retaining clip on. I don't think I could get it off if I ever had to uninstall it.

So is there any reason why the adapter can't get fully tapped and threaded all the way through, so a larger bolt and a lock nut can be used? Is there not enough space?

The other option could be a crush washer to keep tension. I'm not sure until I pick up this kit.

Probably could. I bet it would also be easier to grip it if this were a hex head bolt.

Yeah, it's quite difficult to jam an allen socket in there.

Yea. Is the bolt recessed? And does it need to be? Could a hex bolt be used or would the size of it hit something?

Could you grind down the sides of the hex bolt enough to fit a wrench on there? I know the tunnel doesn't allow much room for a bigger bolt, especially when reverse is engaged.

So a combination of crush-washer and a switch out to a hex head bolt would probably be the best choice for this issue? I'm planning to install this kit this weekend, but I really don't want to have to get back under this thing after it's done. I'd planned to use red locktite, but the thought of trying to back that bolt out if I ever needed to go back to stock makes that a scary proposition.

Don't do it. It's a horrible design.

And who the hell specifies a socket head cap screw with a 7 mm hex? That just adds insult to injury.

There is not a whole lot of choice. It is either this or Kartboy and that one is much more expensive and seems to have vibrating issues.

Just cake the bolt full of red locktite, and when the day comes to part out, you'll just have to think, "is this really worth anything anyway"

I will say it is worth it. The kartboy is nice, but the TRD was cheaper honestly.

Good point. I don't like using locktite on fasteners unless I have access to drill them out in case they get stripped. When I get this kit, I'll likely modify it
