The "problems" with Mobil1 and Royal Purple posted in other Subaru forums are from turbo owner's running thin Energy/Resource Conserving 5W-30 and 10W-30. Many of these oils will shear out of grade in many applications. People seem to think that these companies only make 5W-30 when they make many different grades. Mobil1 0W-40 does really well in turbo Subaru's. Royal Purple's web site says their API SN 5W-30 meets fuel economy requirements of a 20 grade and recommend their High Performance Street oil for high performance applications. The new GF5 5W-30 oils (even Mobil1) are actually showing good uoa results in turbo Subaru's.

0W-20's are usually made from better base stocks than 5W-30's. Even so, if a light 5W-30 shears to a 20 grade, is your engine going to explode? Sorry, but one $30 uoa is not going to answer that question.

Is any of this relavant in a BRZ/FR-S that specs 0W-20? No!

Did some research on various oils / lubricants for my Vette not long ago. I readily found that the professional analysis and reports of Royal Purple were all sub-par. Cool name though - "Royal Purple". In the end, Mobil1 almost always came out on top. That said, I use Mobil1 in all of my cars.

The military exchange down here sells Royal Purple though, and its the only 0w-20 oil they offer. Its a little cheaper than online or out in town, and no taxes, so I figured I would ask and look into it a little more.

I'm not sold. They don't disclose enough about their additives. Marketing .. bleh. I'll take science.

Redline, Motul .. good stuff

I wouldn't be scared to use RP in the brz, it's still gonna be better than mineral oil or at least as good as what subaru offers.

Just make sure that what you read is not from a seller or brand, rather from an independant research. There is plenty of info online, then you or anyone for that matter, can make an informed decision.

In all honesty, as long as the oil is changed every 5k (synthetic), it really doen't matter which of the popular brands is selected. Just use the correct oil weight as recommended by the owners' manual. The FRS, while a fun and "swift" car, typically is not being stressed like that of a tracked car (ex. my 600+hp Vette).

However, as for the rear diff, transmission fluids... my expericne suggests sticking with mobil1 for the rear diff and OEM recommended for the transmission.

I wouldn't say Royal Purple is bad, per se. But I'm not convinced it's worth the price premium. I like oils with a high HTHS rating. They aren't as good for economy, but are better for the engine. And if I remember correctly, RP tends to be OK in HTHS, but there are better oils in that regard.

Shocking difference in performance

My BRZ has 12K miles on it. Been running Subarus synthetic. Just did an oil change with Royal Purple synthetic and a high flow performance filter.
I am amazed at the immediate noticeable difference in my car.
It is way smoother, revs much faster, and must have an additional 10-15Hp and torque.
How is this even possible with just an oil change? Is Subaru using sh** for oil??
All I can say is do it now. I used the recommended weight as per the owners manual and approx 5.7 quarts.
For $80 this has got to be the cheapest and best performance mod going.
My BRZ feels like a different car. Unreal.

Neither RP or Mobil1 are "Full Synthetic" like they claim and people think.
For fully synthetic oil look for "100% Synthetic" in the bottle. My choice is Torco.

Don't be a victim of marketing. 100% synthetic does not have any legal meaning except in Germany. ExxonMobil indeed uses polyalphaolefins, esters, and alkylated naphthalenes in their oils.

Regardless of the base stocks used, the most important thing is that the oil meets the proper specs.

It might not have a legal definition but some manufacturers pride themselves on the difference.
100 percent synthetic only uses base IV and V synthetic base oils while "Full Synthetic" can use as little or less of 10 percent of a IV base mixed with mineral based oils (I, II and III) and still be called "synthetic" thanks to Castrol back in 1999.
Can somebody out there be calling their product "100 percent synthetic" while using a mineral base? Sure, that where research into a product comes into play. That's why when a lot of people look into buying an American car, after research they are surprised that on the top of the list is a Toyota Camry.

Where are you finding these guidelines? Again this is marketing. The Castrol "ruling" by the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau made no such guidelines and neither does the API or the SAE.

100% anything base stock oils are rare and I doubt they even exist. Red Line uses PAO's and POE's, Motul uses esters and PAO's in their 300V, etc. Each base stock has its negatives and you overcome the negatives by blending different base stocks.
