update:

SOA is telling me the same thing that the dealership did --- that since it is not "under normal driving conditions" that they won't do anything.

Its easier to hear at higher RPMS in 2/3/4 gears so I guess that is "outside of normal driving conditions".

Ugh, mine started doing this now above maybe 5k rpm. It reminds me of my old 280zx which did this until I replaced the entire mechanism. I wonder if a solid one piece shift knob would not have the rattle, or at least as bad? I noticed with the knob off there is no rattle and tightening it helped a bit. I really dread the thought of taking my car in to the stealership.

lol mine ended up being the knob trim ring. Epoxied it last night. Still can't believe that was it.

My shift linkage was replaced, and now it's louder. Ugh.

Now they're going to replace my whole transmission to get it to stop rattling. Apparently they have some record of success with fixing this rattle by replacing the whole thing. Seems extreme to me, but it's their money.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but after they replaced the whole transmission did the rattling stop?

Thank you!!

TRD quickshifter installed and it started vibrating like crazy 2000 rpm and then on. Almost sounds like a plastic part is rattling now. My damn problem is all of a sudden I can't shift into second gear. 11,000 miles here and all freeway with TRD exhaust as well as my only additions. Getting really irritated with crickets now this.

Same problem here, shifter rattles above 4000 rpms. Scion replaced my shifter and the noise went away for about an hour and a half. Came back and now they are opening a ticket with Toyota. I'll try and keep you guys updated on my car.

Okay so after weeks waiting with the dealership, they are replacing my entire transmission for two reasons: when shifting in to 5th from 6th at or above 75 mph, it grinds, and because of my rattling shifter. I'm hoping this will fix all the problems with the car as I've had to take it in for repairs 8 times now.

The grinding when shifting from 5th to 6th over 4.5KRPM I had it too. Went away after replacing both transmission and differential oil with redline oil for tranny and diff. My shift knob on the other hand just started rattling but so far looks like it's the knob as there is no rattle with the knob removed. It doesn't happen all the time and I have my radio on most of the time so I haven't been looking to fix it.
