Everything he says makes sense and is what I have been trying to do, but unsuccessfully. I think I'm really going to have to slow it down significantly to practice the line first in order to figure it out. Getting the car straight enough for hard braking is the tough part. Your mind's instinct for self preservation is another part....
I finally looked at a track map, and realized that 3 is another corner down the road. When I wrote "3", I meant part 2 of Corner 2, the hairpin. My comments were all about that hairpin which offers a number of different approaches, although my brain suggests that there really is only ONE fastest way for a given car and setup.

I like Stiglet's line. I went and found some of Pobst's videos and watched him through the hairpin again at L.S. and his line looks virtually identical to Stiglet's, if not quite as quick. That Stiglet fellow's got some real talent.

Stiglet employs what I call the "Jim Clark Line." I think it's most evident entering Turn 2, and up at the top of the hill entering the Corkscrew. He turns in well before you, Joe, and before Pobst, too, at the Corkscrew. The boy's quick.

In the wet, it is a good idea to choose a higher gear than one would use in the dry; you'll probably be both quicker and safer.

There is a turn (10) here at Wild Horse Pass West (formerly Firebird) where I actually upshift from 2nd to 3rd and simultaneously brake for turn in just because it's smoother through the turn instead of being topped out in 2nd with 'technically' more power. I then have to shift back down to 2nd for turn 11, but being in the middle of the powerband in turn 10 allows me to smoothly throttle steer instead of being choppy.

Exactly. Your car will be less "nervous." (Imagine hearing this in Jackie Stewart's Scottish brogue. )

I kept expecting to see this thing get away from him as it does here ... in the previous "lap record" video.

I'm a bit surprised to see this poor recovery, though. He over-corrected that initial big slide, which is a mistake common to beginners. This guy doesn't drive like the typical beginner, so it surprised me. I expect he doesn't make that mistake too often, though. 'Cuz he's still ALIVE!

Note that he pretty much kept his boot in it for the first part, only easing up on the throttle as he got into that big "tank slapper."

It's what I call a "squirt-worthy" moment. That would be a squirt in the Depends.

Wow, that is not a place to drop two wheels either! I don't know what it was like when the video was taken, but all the times I've been there they have warned us how bad the drop right there is due to run-off eroding the dirt.

It's tough to impress Mike, LOL. I'm impressed. Pobst does 1:36.7 in a stock GT3 RS 3.8L, and this guy did it in 1:33.1 in a GT3 RS 4.0. The Hoosiers give him about 3 seconds over pilot sport cup tires, and the RS 4.0 is maybe 1 second faster than the RS 3.8L, so he's on pace with Pobst, IMO.

Nah, Röhrl is long since past it. I've heard he has red hair, so I'm going with Patrick Long.

I don't think he had safety as a first priority when he said this. He does this to force himself to push harder. Dude has since retired from AMA but now races in amateur marathons and mountain-biking races still use the same approach "pooosh poooosh" lol

Nuuuu, you'll need it.

We're just trying to help you see that there are other more useful ways of measuring progress in the beginning. Focusing on speed and the stopwatch results can actually IMPEDE your progress as a beginner.

First get it done RIGHT.

THEN try to do it right, progressively faster.

I think you'll make better progress that way, and it is certainly much SAFER that way.

You gotta live to tell about it, right?

If you're hungry, why not?

Sometimes you must slow down to go faster.

Describe the largest radius that's practical. It's mathematically faster.

If it's not a decreasing radius corner REQUIRING additional steering lock after turning in, then once having turned in, one should never need to apply additional lock. If you need more lock, you've done it wrong. Note that here's an instance where you don't need your stopwatch to tell you this, although the mistake will probably show up in your laptime.

From the apex onwards you want to be unwinding your steering while simultaneously feeding in more throttle.

Remember: Your throttle is not a switch, not ON/OFF.

When I want to go faster, I say to myself, "Smooooth it."
I'm young at heart. (To put it nicely)

"Smooove~ it" got it! That's similar to what I say in my head (if not saying out loud under my helmet. Probably with some sort of contorted facial expression) whenever I'm riding at a faster pace. "Smooove smoove."

There is this gentleman I know. A multi time WERA racing champ. The only advice he ever gives when anyone asks him how to go faster "open throttle facking pooosie" with a thick Romanian accent. He's not much of a coach..... Lol
