I think the Subaru engine era for the 86 is over. Seems like BMW may be in the next model year FR-S. Plus BMW has way better build and finish quality than Subaru. BMW would have to retool for the FR-S so that could be done or could be done. Soon I hope. The MY '16 should begin exporting around June 2015, we shall see.

I haven't been down this road so i obviously can't go down it again. I don't live on here, last I heard Subaru is out BMW is in. Post your facts about what i'm wrong about and be mature and don't respond that way. Be useful if you know the facts!

Forums are public bulletin boards for opinions like.... "I think the Subaru engine era for the 86 is over. Seems like BMW may be in the next model year FR-S." It's just wishful thinking but not counting on it. Relax man.

The fact is that there is no official statement anyplace that Subaru is out nor BMW in.
You just keep on waiting for the next model year when everything will be perfect OK
Done.
No further comment nor debate from me.

Good interview. Seems like he takes a lot of pride and ownership over the ongoing GT86 project, which was probably a key factor in the Twins' past success and is encouraging for future development. Can't wait to see what's to come.

Have fun driving your future classic.
No pre-cats. It is 2ZZ swapped. I have a nice little inventory of spares and do almost all my own work which is another reason to keep it.

As far as the looks go, some love it and some hate it. Most of the gen 2 people hate it but it gets a ton of attention with the hardtop at the Cars and Coffee or around town. But as you know there is nothing else on the road quite like it and although I wish Toyota would do another MR2, I am really OK if they don't because I would probably be disappointed with what they produce.

If I didn't have it though I really like the RS 1.0.

This car starts to become unsafe for your standard driver with a turbo IMO.. I was just imagining today what it would feel like. Its maniacle. its so lite already id be loosing traction everywhere. They are trying to sell to the general public. Its a squirrelly fun car right out of the box. a turbo would be too much for kids buying an under 30k sports car. their would be so many wrecks if this ting came with 250 lbs of torque. It would be nuts. Crazy fun.. but nuts

Yeh he has been with Toyota for a while and he like to make the consumer happy. Just seems like a genuine guy from the interviews that he does on video.

I agree, the spirit of the car is for NA engine and he is holding his idea to not mess with it too much, engine wise.

I agree that it would be too much for the average driver and negatively effect the design intentions of pure handling; not to mention the effects on weight, reliability, and fuel economy. All I think the FR-S needs is just a little more mid-to-high range torque and power with a smoother power band. The best solution is to go with a 2.2-2.5L and further tune the intake and exhaust. That route has virtually no drawbacks if done right.

You do realize that the 86/FR-S/BRZ is made at a Subaru plant, right? They are not going to ship everything to or from Germany just to change out the engine. The whole car was designed around the Boxer engine. That was Tada-san and the lead designer's first goal with the car: "We must have a lower CoG engine such as Boxer or Rotary." Now there may be another Toyota sports car in the works with BMW coming soon but that will be separate from the 86/FR-S/BRZ line.
