I dont have the sport mode always on.

I will turn it on when it is needed? Like showing off, or speeding?

Showing off or speeding? Probably the two worst reasons to put it in sport mode.

I drive with it in regular mode except when i know I'll be doing tight cornering with plenty of run off space on the sides and know that the stability control will just grind me to a halt. (the stability control kicking in is more violent than a little bit of slide)

Showing off is what leads to wrecks. Speeding? Thats when you'd need stability control the most in case you mess up. Sport mode is better at low speeds.

Sport mode is for snow
All on is for snow or rain at higher speeds.

my start up routine is seat belt on, traction control button press and hold until everything is off, disengage handbrake, drop into first, and drive away! 99% of the time that's the case unless it's nighttime and I'm just trundling along and don't want the dash lights annoying me

If you are "just trundling along" then you had better not be seeing TC or VSC lights coming on or there's something wrong with your car.

You can drive this car well into the realm of "Reckless driving" on the street without ever seeing TC or VSC lights.
For those that claim to see them "all the time" on the street they had better check their definition of "normal driving style".

I drive with the assists all on all the time unless I need to get out of an icy spot.
Even a full day at the track (and about half a set of tire's lifetime) and my 18 year old son and I left them on the whole time.
Yes we saw them come on at times, but for a new driver in performance driving school, they were just fine.

You need to have better than average skill levels to ever NEED them off for performance reasons.
(I admit that if you own one of the twins you likely ARE better than an average driver)

Also, this myth of holding down the buttons to turn things off persists. I don't understand why.

The only way to completely turn of traction control and vehicle stability control is do the pedal dance. It still leaves ABS on.

So this is what is possible:
-Pressing the TRAC button turns off traction control and is useful if you are stuck in ice, snow, mud, gravel, etc. It will come back on at 31mph
-Pressing the VSC button and putting the stability control in sport mode give you more of a yaw angle before the system kicks in and saves your ass.
-Holding the TRAC button (3 seconds) will allow you to be in VSC off mode (although the pedal dance testing proves that all of the VSC system is not offline...Auto LSD is still there) and TRAC off at the same time beyond 31mph
-The pedal dance will actually disable all of this stuff + brake based stability control (called Auto LSD), but not ABS.

You shouldn't really be messing with any of this on your daily commute.

I think he's talking about the lights on the dash that come on when you turn the system off. They are mildly annoying at night.
