Any consensus on best manual transmission fluid choice?
I have seen so many names mentioned, like Motul, Redline, Amsoil, Pentosin, MTL etc. This is too much information for a layman like me to digest. So if anybody can briefly summarize the pro and con, it would help a lot. If you can pick one for me, it would be even better.
I live in NorCal, where it never gets too cold. So I do not care too much about trans. performance in extremely cold days. What I want is (1) Make the shift buttery smooth. (2) Stick to the manual. I remember the manual calls for a 70w-90 and GL4. Here is what I do not understand. Which is more important? 70w-90 or GL4? If I use a 70w-80, but GL4, am I out of warranty? Similarly, if I use a 70w-90, GL5, am I out of warranty? Many thanks. Last edited by qqzj; 04-22-2014 at 06:20 PM. |

GL4 is required for the Trans, if you put GL5 in you will ruin your synchos.
Motul Gear 300 is GL4 and GL5 rated so it's good for both the rear diffy and the trans. We've used Amsoil and Motul for years and both are great products having put them in 1000s of subies over the past 12+ years. -Mike Paisan Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Enthusiasts since 2001. It's actually 75-90. Like many others on this forum I have Motul 300 in my tranny and diff, feels great. 3 little things that made me choose Motul: You can buy 4 bottles and fill both the trans and diff because they take 3.5 combined. The bottle has a spout so no need for a fluid pump. It satisies the OEM weight specifications. T

In general, Motul 300 GEAR is one of the top choices if not the top.
Can't go wrong.

Just changed to motul 300 last night in both the diff and tranny (22.5kmi), wish I did it the first week I had the car. The loud lurch/clunk sound is gone when shifting gears, gears shift much smoother and quicker, cold start crunch is gone no longer have to N blip shift in the morning (yes, still have 20 degree mornings in CNY), I can't be happier, got 4 bottles for $85 online. Didn't buy the crush washers, just cleaned the ones on there and flipped them over, going to replace them next change. Plus, the motul bottles make it damn easy to pump the new fluid into each without having to buy or use anything separate.

Same as the others. Just put Motul Gear 300 in my trans and diff and am very, very happy with it. Shifting is buttery smooth until it firmly clicks into gear.
The awesomeness of the bottles cannot be overstated. The pull-out spout built into the bottle cap makes filling both the diff and trans easy without a fluid pump. |

Motul 300 is great I suspect if you live where it's warm. From consistent praise from those who have steady warm climates. However where I live or anywhere that is really cool in mornings Motul 300 is no better then factory fill and oddly enough for me it was worse. Shifting felt like crap and I went to MTF2 Pentosin and like a whole new tranny just smooth.

By the way guys, we can drop ship Motul Gear 300 to you if you want to help support folks who support this forum.
I believe for the BRZ/FRS it's $80 shipped for what you need for the Trans and Rear Diffy. -mike |
