Oil galley plug locations?

Greetings.


On the topic of available ports for sensors (oil temp/press etc):

I heard rumors that there is an oil galley plug on the passenger side rear of the block, somewhere near the ECU? Can anyone confirm?

The list of access points for a sensor seems to be:

Please correct any errors/ omissions:

1. OEM Galley plug under alternator, need galley plug adapter
2. OEM oil pressure switch location near oil filter, 1/8 BSPT thread(?)
3. Rear galley port?? See Q above
4. Aftermarket sandwich plate under oil filter, 2 or 3? Locations
5. Aftermarket oil pan with access port ( or tapped OEM pan) possibly limited uses/effectiveness(?)
6. Other?

From this picture, and from what I believe to be the case, there are three unused oil galley plugs on the block: Part# 11024



The one on the top, driver's side, front of the motor is accessible. It is between the throttle body and ac compressor:




The rear oil galley plug, on the driver's side, on the back of the motor, is not accessible. It is behind the flywheel seen here:



The plug at the bottom, front, passenger side of the motor doesn't look to be accessible, as the timing cover seems to cover it:





You can remove the oil pressure, dummy-light sensor or T into it, and there might be other locations to T into throughout the engine, but not anymore galley plugs:




1. A galley plug with a hole is needed and the appropriate NP or NPT threads for that hole or a NP to NPT adapter can be used.

2. BSPT or NP thread.
3. No port.
4. Usually NPT threaded holes on these sandwich plates.
5. I don't think this will work...only for use as an oil return hose for turbos or recirculating catch cans.
6. See attached photos...none is the answer.

It's a drag that we cannot get at more than 1 galley connector right into the block.

However: I found another option for those of us using oil coolers with the passthrough plate under the oil filter:

Jackson Racing and others are now selling a 4-connector oil filter adapter that will accept as many as four sensors ( two plus an oil cooler) via the appropriate adapters:




And here's one from Toyhead racing: (toyota specific but not tested by me):




Finally, GREDDY sells one as well (not tested by me, YMMV):

Thanks. Sandwich plates were always an option, but less desirable for some. This solution seems simpler and cleaner. Thanks for the post.

I am using the Forester XT OEM oil cooler. Do you guys think using a sandwich plate (not one of the ones listed above, but a normal one) between the filter and the cooler would be acceptable?

I've seen it done in one other instance... but that doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence.

Necro but I’m removing an oil pressure sensor that’s tapped in the top engine galley. I got SU003-00108 but can't find the torque value to tighten it to. Anyone know?

It looks like a plug with a flange and has teflon/thread seal.

I'm guessing keep going until the flange touches the face on the engine, and maybe give it 10 ft-lb?

How tight and hard is this top gallery plug to get out?

Does anyone know how much variation there is in pressure and temp between this location, the front OEM location, and a sandwich plate?

Good questions. It's SUPER tight. Make sure you use an accurately-manufactured tough socket head driver. It'll let go with a snap.

You can decide for yourself if you want to sweat the pressure/temp difference.

I was looking for the same thing and just found it: 27.3 ft-lbf

What's the thread size on the OEM pressure sensor?

Dont forget the one on the right hand side head at the front under the injector cover, usually used to feed the vacuum pump on auto cars. But if you have a manual you have a good oil feed location there. M12x1.5 IIRC
