2017 86 - Rear Diffuser

Hey Everyone,

A few weeks ago I totaled my Monogram Series FRS.

I have recently purchased an 86 (Kouki). And visually the oem rear diffuser appears to be different (length) versus the older FRS/86/BRZ.(Yes im aware the 86 has a new rear bumper style)

The old one to me is aesthetically appealing . Has anyone on here swapped out the new oem diffuser for the older one?

Without me dropping coin and finding out myself.

Thanks Everyone!

- Wolf

Just adding if anyone cares

Also to note, the rear bumper/ diffuser for the 86 (Kouki) is slightly rounder near the end (where the mudflaps goes). I actually replaced my 13’ FRS bumper for a 17’ 86 bumper, and I couldn’t apply the mudflaps to it. I had to order the 17’ mudflaps due to the different shape

The 17’ BRZ seems to not have adopted the extra line that runs across the diffuser like the 86. At least that’s what I noticed. Not sure why, need confirmation.

*edit: @Tokay444 I'm sorry, I don't mean diffuser, but I meant the black bottom part that houses the reverse lights and holds around the exhaust tips

I’m not going to argue with you as it’s pointless. Clearly when someone would say rear bumper I wouldn’t think of the black trim on the rear. Rear bumper/rear bumper cover are all the same terminology.

Sorry if calling that black trim a rear diffuser is incorrect in your books. But it makes sense when describing location.

It’s not a diffuser. It doesn’t diffuse anything. Therefore calling it a diffuser is the same a calling it a banana, or anything else it’s not.

You should add that the rear "diffuser" is now integrated into the bumper itself, so the add-on piece is no longer available.

It's actually quite meaningful, because you two are talking about same things but talking past each other.

2013-16 had a factory add-on optional item that was called a diffuser.

For 2017+ this was integrated into the bumper. If you want to be accurate you could ask if there were any rear bumper extension parts.

That's exactly what it is!!
Do you think that was Toyota's intentions?
Any idea why Subaru didn't do this?

just trying to get people thinking

I did some digging around, turns out the 2017+ Subaru BRZ rear bumper is the same as 2013-2016

So... the rear add-on "diffuser" is still available for 2017 BRZ but not 2017 86 (since the rear bumper is redesigned).

I'm guessing this is entirely for Subaru internal or STI reasons, since the 2013-16 bumper still allows use of STI parts.

Neither one of them are actually diffusers for anything more than a sales pitch.

Subaru has called it a diffuser since day 1, so while we all know it's not a "real" diffuser, using the term that they use is easier on everyone.

Back to the subject, the new 86 doesn't have one available from Toyota as of yet. The aftermarket may have one though, and I bet the real diffuser from Velox fits...

We should call it "rear lip spoiler" since in 2017 everyone wants to be technically correct.
