Alpine Install

One of my mates let me know of a deal that was too good to pass so I bit. I am still using the factory speakers powered off the Alpine Head Unit.

A bit of Time correction and 9-band EQ does wonders to make the car sound better.

Parts Used:
Alpine Head Unit
Metra 95-8202 Toyota Double Din Dash kit
Metral 70-1761 Radio Wiring Harness
PAC TR7 Universal Trigger module for Brake Bypass
Metra 40-LX11 Lexus Antenna Adaptor

Here are some photos and information that may help others in case they were wondering what was going on back there...

Harness

Getting the wiring all soldered. This is where I put together the harness that came with the Alpine, the metra 70-1761, and the PAC TR7.

One thing I learned the hard way was that the factory amplifier is turned on using the "Power Antenna" Blue wire. My Alpine did not send 12V through this wire unless the radio source was selected; this meant my door speakers were pretty much off when using my iPod/BT/Pandora/etc.

I correct this, I tied together the power antenna wire and the ACC/ignition wire on Metra 70-1761 Harness. Worked a treat.

The PAC TR7 is used to trick the Head Unit into thinking my foot brake and parking brake is engaged all the time. This way I can mess with the radio while I'm driving and watch a DVD, which I won't do. **SUPER UNSAFE**

Connectors Left to Right

Antenna - Used
Mic/Brake Sensor/Speed Sensor(?)/3.5mm(?) - Unused
Rear Speakers - Used
Front Speakers/Power/ACC/Ground/Power Antenna - Used
USB - Unused

Have to do some fact checking on some of the above.

I wanted to get it all working with minimal fuss. As a result, the OEM microphone in the headliner, 3.5mm jack, and USB jack no longer work.

Dash apart

I've done audio in all of my cars before. With respect to the headunit this is by far the easiest install I've ever done.

Pull off the faux carbon fiber panels off using your hands. Use a 10mm socket to remove the 4 bolts securing the radio. Then unplug the radio and it's free.

Bespoke connectors

The Bespoke unit is surprisingly well equipped for a factory option. What surprised me was three sets of outputs for hooking up an extensive amplifier network.

The connector to the right of the USB connector (gray) and the left most connector in the right grouping are unused. Maybe it is for GPS or the OEM+ addon or something.

Brackets installed

Here are all the brackets installed on the Alpine. You need a Phillips head screwdriver or 8mm socket to remove the bolts securing the mounting brackets to the Bespoke.

Place the Metra dash kit on top of the bracket and secure to the head unit. What is lame is that you have to modify the Metra dash kit depending on the car used. It is even documented in the manual that modification is required. Tin snips make cutting the ABS plastic a breeze.

The following pictures show how the metra dash kit fits around the head unit and mounting bracket. It's not a 100% fit, but will do the job.

Looks like the area in the dash(passenger side) cover would a perfect place to hide contraband.

"+ LOVE that the dealer put on a tint compliance sticker on my car to keep the cops off my back."

Your car looks great, man! Quick question regarding the above...does that come from the factory or did your dealer do something special?

Thanks, much appreciated. The dealer installed the tint and placed that decal under the tint when they installed it. I have never been hassled by the 5-0 but its good peace of mind.

Blackstone Labs Reports

Right before I installed the Vortech Unit I changed the fluids in Lola and got them analyzed. Had 10500mi on the clock when the fluids were changed.

Well Shoot

My car has had a hard time cranking for a while (months). I finally took it to get it tested and three different stores said I had a bad battery. Either my dashcam did her in, or the repeated vibration from the suspension killed it. Well shoot

The Stock battery is a Panasonic 390CCA Group 35 coming in at 30 lbs. I could of went smaller and lighter, but the Braille B14115/Deka ETX14 seemed to offer the same performance as the stock battery and the Odyssey 680 is only 220 CCA.

I know CCA isn't everything and the battery is only used to start the car. With my electronics and the fact I rely on this car for my transport needs, I only felt comfortable with a huge battery to fulfill my needs. There is also the fact that there is now a supercharger pulley the engine has to turn.

Here comes the Diehard Platinum. From what I gather it is the same battery as Odyssey, one of the best out there. Got all the nifty features like AGM, etc. Only thing is that it doesn't have the metal jacket offered on the Odysseys

I know its heavier than stock (38lbs) but I'll compromise if it means having a car that starts everytime.

Bonus: My catch can bracket is starting to rust. It's steel. I know. Have to fix it soon
