Legal question for NC residents

Hey guys, I got clocked by a cop doing 85 in a 65. He said I have to appear in court for this citation but that is a 7 hour drive for me. When I told him that he informed me when I get the paperwork in the mail I can get someone to represent me, so I'm guessing he meant something like an attorney.

I'm not familiar with the speeding laws and such in NC. How much money/ points am I looking at? Has anyone had a similar situation? What is the best way to handle this. I REALLY don't have enough leave to appear in court so I'm thinking an attorney is my only option.

Thanks guys!

Yes, you should get some letters from attorneys in the near future. You need to call and talk to them and see what your options are.

$400ish depending on the lawyer and town/city. Check this out for points. http://www.ncdot.gov/download/dmv/ha...DL_English.pdf As stated, you'll get letters from lawyers. Talk to them and try to get it reduced or your license could be suspended for 30 days. But I don't know how that translates over to Ohio? I take it?

Thanks a lot guys. I was going 80 anyway but the cop seemed nice so I didn't want to argue. Doesn't do any good anyway. I'll just wait for the letters to roll in. Just wanted to know how much money I need to set aside for this shit. My license is in Ohio so I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter much. Insurance will probably go up though.

Thanks again.

Time to lawyer up! It's highly unlikely that any lawyer will be able to get your ticket dismissed, but the usual song and dance will probably work, which is getting your ticket reduced. If you can get your ticket reduced to around 9 over or less insurance wise you shouldn't have any issues with increased rates.

As to lawyer fees, would plan on around $400, including court fees.

This may be too late, but the NC speeding ticket issue is (in my experience) a good old boys network. You pay the local lawyer a few hundred dollars more than the ticket and he gets it knocked to 0 points and court fees. Just pick one of the 15 letters you've already received in the mail by now and let them take it.

I hate lawyers only slightly less than car insurance companies (I've got friends that are car insurance agents, but I have family that are lawyers so I might be biased against lawyers)

Wondering what happened with this. Just got a 82 in a 55 ticket (downhill, speed limit just changed).

Hoping for the best, i've had no points/tickets in the last 10 years, so hoping they can see it as a "fluke". FL license.

I got a ton of letters from legal offices in the area. I hired one for $50 and they got it knocked down to some other offense. Sorry I can't remember exactly. $250 fine and no points. If you got the cash, don't sweat it. Isn't it great how our traffic laws work?

Oh you got a ticket? Well my uncle is knows the judge so pay me $50 and we'll work something out. And we give other countries shit for being "corrupt"

LOL! Fucking exactly what happened! Whatever, as long as I don't have any points or a warrant then fuck it, I don't care.

Follow up afterward to make sure everything was filed properly and nothing more is outstanding. If not, it can bite you later. I learned that lesson the hard way.

Exactly. Got a ticket in California about 5 years ago on my Massachusetts licence. Handled everything via email and fax, paid up good to go. Or so I thought. Moved to Nc two years ago and was informed that I had a warrant for my arrest in Cali for FTA. One piece of paper was not filled out by the lawyer that had to do with me being a non resident. Nothing like working on a Tuesday afternoon and your boss who is a federal marshal slams your door asking you wtf your problem is and why are you wanted for arrest.

Yeah pretty much what happened to me. Albeit without the federal Marshall slamming doors. Hahaha
