To be more specific. The head bolts to the block and then the cam is secured into the cam subassembly and then the subassembly is bolted to the heads. The manual says warpage comes if you try to unbolt the cam caps to release the cams from the subassembly without removing the subassembly from the head first. |

That is an interesting concept. The rockers on this thing are tiny so it this very well may be possible. The shims don’t add much length to the shim you may not even have to bother with them. The trick would be developing a custom tool for compressing the springs without blocking the ability to pull the rocker out. How ever they go about this job it most likely will not be the way the current service manual says to do it. The manual wasn’t designed with mass rebuilds in mind. They are going to find someway to make this job quicker than the way laid out in the manual. It will be interesting to see what they come up with. Last edited by ermax; 12-12-2018 at 05:20 PM. |

I worked a scion tc that hit a money shift and floated the valves. 5 rockers just popped out from under the cams and it drove to the shop under it's open power.
I managed to reinstall the intake rockers and shims without lifting the cam, installing the rocker on the lifter and compressing it with a small 1/4 drive socket on an extension and slipping the shim under it. The only thing that stopped me doing the same on the exhaust was the rockers angle in the head. Though I may have spoken too soon, looking at pics of the head more closely it seems a bit trickier. There's some good room to compress the lifter on the exhaust, but not much to work on the springs, then there's plenty of room to work on the springs for the intake, but not too compress the lifter. |

I have the actual recall repair manual, it says if the spring broke it almost always happens within the first 5000km/miles.
I think I wont do the recall on mine. |

Its an official document from Subaru, I dont want to do anything that will get me into trouble with them.
I am currently at work and will be done at around 23:00 CET, I will try to upload the page as soon as possible where it says "within the first 5000km/miles." |
