The one thing I never came across in my research before buying this car was how crap the stock battery is, brand new and is struggling a bit already in cold weather.:S

2017 comes with the same as previous years Panasonic CCA 390

In my 2017 BRZ I can attest the fog light makes a significant difference illuminating the immediate road surface to the front and sides. So those fog light does work as intended (presuming the Toyota ones are the same).

Have never had an issue with my battery. Maybe people don't realize that they need to maintain them?

It's possible there are just a lot of bad ones. I was going to switch to a tiny 5 pound battery but now that I have a GPS and will have a dash cam drawing power constantly I'm not sure that's going to be practical anymore

Seems like awful QC. I find that kind of hard to believe, but I guess not outside the realm of possible.

Mine's just now starting to crank a little slowly in the cold on the original battery which is over four years old. Thanks mostly to the heat down here in Texas, most batteries only last five or six years so I figure that's not too far off.

I had my original battery exchanged under warranty. The new is very good (touch wood).

For what it's worth - I experienced the same initially, however after getting my 1st oil change (to Mobil 1 0w-20) done the engine now turns over "normal" even when it's even colder now than before. My 2cents...

0w-20 is 0w-20 no matter who makes it so I don't know how it would make anything change as far as starting goes.

The placebo is strong with this one.

Well, consider these:

1. Is it possible that the 0w-20 motor oil from the factory when they deliver the car, is a slightly different formula than the ones used in subsequent oil changes.

2. Isn't it a common fact that as the car get driven, motor oil loses viscosity and gets dirty. This is especially true in a brand-new vehicle as there are more metal particles, thus a possibility that the oil no longer has the same viscosity range (ie. 0W-20) that it would have when it was new? I can see that the original oil having lot of metal particle from initial engine break-in, moisture and acids from combustion blowby, etc.

0W-20 is 0W-20. Correct it is a range not an absolute number and if your used oil has exceeded that range enough to impact cranking then that would be amassing. "Formula" has nothing to do with it. If you have that many particles in your engine after break in you are going to have issues.

That Was Fast: Toyota Recalls Certain 2017MY 86 Models

Quote:
Toyota announced it’s recalling certain 2017 86 models, equipped with the automatic transmission, in North America.

The company said that the 94 involved vehicles that have an increased risk of rollaway when parked and crash as the connectors for the automatic transmission key interlock may not have been connected during the pre-delivery service.

If the connectors were not connected, this allows removing the key in gear positions other than ‘Park’, hence the safety risk.

All known owners of the involved cars will be notified by first class mail, starting in January where they’ll be instructed to return their car to a Toyota dealer to have the ignition key interlock checked and if necessary, connect the delivery mode connector at no charge.

Toyota revised the 86 model (formerly known as the Scion FR-S) for MY2017 with more aggressive looks, a stiffer chassis and a slightly more powerful 2.0-litre flat-four engine that now makes 205hp and 156lb-ft of peak torque.
