Ignition button in the shifter. Nice idea, but I see one problem. Some big dude is going to press it with index finger and the shifter could slide into the 3rd gear.
Every MR2 generation, every SUPRA generation, every CELICA generation, every COROLLA generation is really different from the generation it replaces. This is clearly an 86. They're not introducing a design, they're taking the temperature among people. They know they have to go hybrid. They want to know if they have the numbers to do it, because they have to sell cars. Maybe they're still evaluating what to do with the SUPRA.
Without DCT it will be hard and if they don't teach people how to tune hybrid cars, they will fail. If they fail, it's reasonable to think the next WRX STI will fail too.

The matte black body color expresses we were in a rush to finish the concept.

im pretty sure that isnt a CG render. looks more like a real car too me.

Interesting. I'm digging the targa (a lot) plus the rear tail lights are kinda cool and the rear trunk spoiler is much nicer then the current 86 option imo. The hood louvers are a nice touch too but way too small to be very functional combined with their placement I would think.

But it is cool to see the hybrid power boost like Tada-san had spoke about in years past making it to concept vehicles at least so we know it's not dead yet. Obviously too expensive still for mass market Im guessing but one day we might get that KERS system

Could be. It is very difficult to tell anymore. I always just assume CG when there is no background and the shadows counter the body shape. Until I see it on the ground I figure CG.

after they do a photo-shoot, what they do is copy and paste the car onto a white background for the press release photos.

Oh no doubt but is also the common method of showing CG concepts.

Looks like they combined a 350z front, 86 bits in the middle, and the rear of a Civic, then cut the roof off...

It's a neat concept, but it doesn't really do anything for me. Push button gear selection is silly... but the fake manual shifter looks cool at least.

At least this shows Toyota has some interest in investing some more time and money into the 86 platform. Having more options isn't a bad thing, even if it's not something enthusiasts like us would buy.

Some of you HATED the front of the 2017 front grill and some say this is better looking? Some of you are messed up. This is a concept and ugly as sin. The only good thing is that the rear seats are gone.
