Look white shadow likes to oversteer if he? wants to, each to their own
I prefer rwd over fwd/awd because I prefer having more grip under power rather than less as every car will transfer weight to the back when accelerating, no suspension can fix this, it's just how dynamics work, but again each to their own, but that doesn't mean that you can't have a great time in a fwd. I would rather take my underpowered, but great suspension tuned 323BA to the track over a commodore.. Some ppl like fwd, some ppl like rwd, some ppl like drag, some like track, others offroad, and some don't give a shit as long as its low fuel, cheap to maintain and goes from a to b and there is not a single car that ticks all boxes for everyone..
It's pointless to argue what your personal preferences are. I am happy for the person as long as they are happy with their money spent

Thanks for butchering my thread. The good news is I love the car. The bad news is I feel less inclined to share my experience here.

This might be off topic but i think we should discuss why using a hair curling iron is a great way to make spiral pasta.

The larger majority of FWD cars are just as bad, if not worse.... most of the aren't sports cars, and most aren't even "sporty". Yeah there are exceptions, but don't make out as if a good fwd is the same a good rwd.
No one said all rwds are good and all fwds are shit.
Happy to own fwd as a commuter. But they are ALWAYS compromise on sports driving. WHen your power is going through the same wheels as the steering, it will never handle as well as an equally well sorted rwd. It's physics.

There are so many cars out there in the world and so little time. When you have an itch to buy/drive a car, do it. The worst thing that will happen is you will have made a mistake and that is easily corrected.

Exactly. I was just sharing my own preferences. I'm not saying that I'm right or anyone else who disagrees with me is wrong. It's a personal decision we all make as enthusiasts.

RWD may be fun but the Renaultsport Megane & Clio are faster, in a straight line & around a circuit, than the 86
They are seriously sorted pieces of kit
If you haven't driven one, don't knock them
They have more mid range punch than the 86 and handle like all get out
The only reason I am not getting a Megane RS265 is that I don't need that much power & grip on the road to have fun

I quite agree but that was my point. I think there are such a plethora of fwd vehicles on the road for packaging reasons. That is, fwd engine/drive train take up less room and cheaper to make. In those cars fun driving is not a requirement but just to dismiss a car solely due to it's drive wheels I think is a mistake.

Everything is a compromise. A decision has to be made by the engineers, marketing people and the buyers as to what compromises are made and are acceptable. The 86 is a compromise but less so in the areas that contribute to "sporty driving" (but still a compromise).

I'm not sure rally drivers would agree. Trying to find 2 cars that are equally sorted is next to impossible. How do you make the comparison?

Also, I think, as is usual in these sorts of conversations people always discuss the the cars forgetting that a car won't be going anywhere without a driver behind the wheel.

@m0nty
dont worry about what the guys here say about the clio. its an 86 forum and if you have seen the justification posts in the 86 vs section you will know that they are pretty damn protective of their little toyotas.

i hope you can still come to wakefield with us so that you can show us exactly how good they are. i know you have a lot of circuit experience from your DC5 daysl.

and i also agree that the clio would wipe the floor with an 86 around a track. especially stock for stock.
