Same can be said for the new Supra

Yes.... without a doubt. However, if your sitting in traffic 90% of the time, I don't care how well the car handles, it is not going to be fun.

Meh, I drove the DSG version at one point and it seems okay if you use your car as a DD and want launch control. I just hate how autos shift at times. I think manual GTIs don’t handle tunes as well too

It actually works really well together for two reasons. First the DSG keeps the turbo spooled between gears. Secondly the low end torque from the turbo (peak torque at 1700 rpm) minimizes the benefit off the line from a manual drop-clutch launch. If I remember correctly, the DSG cars are about 1/2 second quicker than manual.

One of the reasons I bought the GTI was because I needed a car the wife could drive, and the GTI and DSG paired so well together.

I'd argue NA torque-challenged cars like the Twins benefit from a manual a lot more (or S2000, Miata, etc.)

I can appreciate that

Atlanta traffic is mind numbing and i had a 25 mile one way commute.

But I still like to work the gears.

I noticed this immediately when getting on it and I was surprised by how it just kept pulling. My two previous turbo vehicles both had manuals and it did not feel that fast because you lost boost every time you shifted.

We have both AT and MT Twins and I think the bulk of the MT's advantage is from a stand still. You can wind up the MT and let it go, and put a healthy chunk of time on the AT.

Other than that, the AT in the Twins is better-executed than most slush boxes on the road and feels like its acceleration is on-par with a well-driven MT Twin.

Yeah the DSG + turbo combination kind of reminds me of a locomotive with its continuous pull when you floor it. Super quick shifts without losing boost in between. Really smooth. I think it matches the refined character of the GTI overall, but just my opinion.

I agree. On the Twins, most of the MT's advantage is launching from a stop. I also drove an AT Twin at the Scion Drive event and thought it was pretty decent for a torque converter setup.

I actually traded my Mk7gti for another 86 (my third). Love gti but I realize I really miss driving a sexy lightweight, rwd, with a manual. The gti although much faster just seems docile even after fully disabling the nannies. Also, at the track I really missed rwd

That's fair. I can't argue, the GTI is smooth all over, but still allows you to push it. It's not raw enough for me, but for your situation it makes sense.

I agree that the GTI deserves a smaller rim/ tire combo with thicker sidewalls. If I ever had kids, I would consider going back to the GTI, but a tire swap to a 17r45 or 50 would have to happen.

I agree. I do miss rwd and the amazing seating position, but for now, I prefer having a more comfortable ride and effortless acceleration with the quick shifts of the DSG. I'm waiting to see how Toyota/Subaru will improve the twins for the next generation.

I noticed that you are located in NYC as well. Where do you go when you want to have a little fun carving up some back roads?

I'm not a 4 door guy and I really don't need the extra cargo space. It will come in handy when I need to transport large items though. I wish they still made the coupe version of the GTI, but such is life. Definitely will be getting a coupe the next time around as I do not see myself having kids in the near future.
