Making my first drive to Canada

This weekend I'm making my first solo trip from Detroit to Hamilton, I've been up to Toronto and Niagara a few times in the past but I think it's been about 10 years and I was always just a passenger.

I know there are a handful of Canadian regulars on here, does anyone have any advice to make the trip go smoothly, or any cool roads I should detour through on my way out or back? I mostly just want to be prepared for border crossing, any tolls along the way and any different driving rules I'm not familiar with, all I've been told so far is that the speed limit is a lot more actively enforced than in Michigan.

OPP routinely sit on the side of the road with speed traps so whenever the road opens up, don’t speed up. Be aware of well sighted straights. That’s where they hide. Often times you don’t even see them until you’re almost passing them. They’ll also pace you in undercover cars so check your mirrors often.

Just don't forget the proper ID. I accidentally crossed the boarder up by Port Huron, made for a fun evening.

If you have a radar detector, you might wish to check to see whether or not it's legal in that part of Canada -

100% illegal and it will be seized if caught.

The drive from Windsor to London is boring as hell. Most people speed like crazy through there and it's heavily enforced.

I just drove from London Ontario in Canada to NYC. Was a very nice drive.

I think you need a passport these days.

I was denied once and they make me go inside every time and search my car subsequently :\

UH I was always under the impression that if you are crossing the USA/ Canada border, you ALWAYS need a passport. Unless you have an enhanced drivers license or a Nexus Card...

Technically you need a WHTI compliant document. Like a passport. Nexus card. Enhanced license etc. At the Canadian/US border if you just have a drivers license and US birth certificate The Officer can use discretion and let you enter if they can verify your U.S citizenship.
All depends on your attitude, how you present yourself and whether or not the Officer is being generous.

Safe travels

No guns or any other self-defense weapons. Manual folding pocket knives are fine. Avoiding political opinions beyond that statement.

Right turn on red allowed, unless signage indicates otherwise or a pedestrian is crossing. Rule of thumb is that going 10km/h above the posted limit is ok, except in school zones. Lots of roundabouts (traffic circles), at least in my parts. You can drive into the intersection on a left turn if light is green. Our freeway on-off ramps are nicer :p

I guess you can just observe what the natives do on the road and follow their lead.

EDIT: Use the mph->km/h button on your FR-S
