I been watching some Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares the past day or so and had to do a doubletake to what he had said:

Nah, that's an old term. Not sure where it got it's start at, but it usually means to throw someting away, pitch it in the trash.

Used it 20+ years ago in the restaurant(s) I worked in. We used it to refer to specials or menu items which were not available, as in definition #2. We actually had an '86' list on a chalkboard. Then there was the usage at the end of the evening for said line cooks, when thrown out of the bar across the street,

I always found the coincidence of HachiRoku and 86 to be funny because of this phrase,

but it means you can say things like 'did you see Taka 86 that guy with his 86'

Yep, that term has been around longer than I have. It was commonly used when a guy got 86'd from a drinking establishment because of his over indulgence and/or his behavior.

I've used that term for years, in fact at work (CAD design) I put stuff I don't need, but don't want to delete yet, on layer 86.

Its an old police term. 86 was the code for murder. That's why restaurants use the term "86 it" to mean get rid of it.
